Chapter 253
Elena sat there for a moment, shocked for what felt like the hundredth time that day. She was speechless that the mysterious caller could be Noah–as well as the immediate hostility Massimo spoke with. The mystery caller hadn’t spoken much and Noah hadn’t said much during their meal either.
Was he just a quiet person? Or had he been trying to make sure Elena didn’t recognize him?
Elena figured it didn’t really matter, seeing as Noah had accidentally admitted to being the mystery caller. All she really cared about was why he had called her in the first place.
But before Elena could speak up and voice her thoughts, her mother did so.
“Let’s not ruin this nice meal,” Sloane chided. “We can have a mature, respectful conversation between adults, can’t we?”
Sloane didn’t wait for an answer. Instead, she simply turned to Elena.
“I might have left the mafia life behind, but there are still some old friends who don’t want me dead,” Sloane said evenly. “I still remember their numbers. And though I never planned on contacting them again, when I heard the new Mafia Queen was Elena, I decided reaching out to them was worth the risk—and one of them was able to find your number, Elena.”
Elena listened carefully. This at least explained why her mother had gotten a hold of her work number–Elena used it exclusively for mafia business. If a mafia member were trying to contact her, they’d obviously only know Elena’s work number.
“That makes sense,” Elena admitted, “but why didn’t you explain yourselves on the phone then?”
“Connection issues,” Sloane answered with a grimace. “I was admittedly too impatient to see if it was really you, so the second I heard the rumor, Noah and I started traveling to New York. Since we were traveling as fast as we could across the country, we didn’t exactly have reliable phone service.”
“It felt like only every third word could get through someti Noah added. “I’m sure that didn’t help with
this… misunderstanding.”
Elena thought back to what conversation she could make out from the first mystery call. She hadn’t been threatened–all in all, the words she could make out were fairly innocent. Rather, with all the activity from Tyler hurting people left and right, Elena had jumped to the worst conclusion.
Elena let out a breath. Everything was fine-
Massimo snorted. His eyes darkened as he leaned on the table, ready for a fight.
“Cute story,” Massimo spat, “but that doesn’t explain the signs of remote hacking.”
“What?” Elena asked.
She had never heard that someone was trying to hack into her phone! Massimo had merely said they mystery caller had kept trying to contact her, but that it was all taken care of.
Massimo turned to Elena, sensing her building frustration. “The calls only stopped after I sent my hackers to trace information back from your stalker. Made it pretty clear this caller didn’t want to be found–and then my men locked that door tightly, so to speak, the second you left through it.”
Massimo turned to Sloane. “So if you’re ‘out of the mafia life,‘ why are you using dirty mafia tricks? And if you really don’t mean Elena any harm, why aren’t you telling her the full truth?”

Massimo was out for blood. The audacity of these strangers to spin a heart–wrenching tale to trick Elena! Luckily, he was far too experienced to be tricked so easily.
Sloane really was a great actress. The moment he called her out, so many emotions flickered across her face- anger, shame, and many others Massimo couldn’t place. But then she settled on something sad and ancient.
Massimo would not be fooled by such petty tricks. Maybe that’s why Sloane chose to look at Elena instead of him.
“I may not have been a real mother for long, but I think I managed to get the worrying part down okay,” she replied. “I didn’t leave Elena in the best of circumstances–I know I didn’t–but… I needed to know she was at least safe. I had to know she wasn’t being sent to her death.”
Sloane held Elena’s gaze for a long moment before turning to face Massimo. In that split second, her gaze hardened.
“So yes, I relied on some old mafia tricks. I’m a hypocrite,” Sloane admitted bitterly. “But I think you, my daughter’s partner, can understand why we don’t always tell the whole truth to the people we love.”
