Chapter 256
“Sounds like a complicated situation,” Max replied.
Elena laughed as she typed out a new message. “It definitely is.”
“Trust your instincts then. You’re smarter than you give yourself credit for. So whether your gut is telling you to run or stay, listen–it’s usually right.”
Elena felt her face grow warm at the unexpected compliment. At the same time she felt a little embarrassed, she was also confused.
She hasn’t had to trust her instincts around Max at all. In fact, she’s usually made bad judgments and choices around him–like thinking he was a heartless, judgmental man.
“You’re saying my instinct to divorce you was perfect?” Elena joked.
“Your instincts are mostly perfect then,” Max corrected.
Work picked up the next few days. At first, Elena wasn’t surprised. With the arrival of colder and colder weather came flu season–and the last thing any mafia don wants is for his allies or subordinates to be taken out of commission by something as trivial as the flu.
“Go with Luca to restock the medicine stores–straight from the suppliers.”
“Check on those guys in upstate New York–actually, you might as well do a repeat visit for all the families in that area.”
“Elena, one of the dons needs your professional help. Get to it.”
It was only a week later when Massimo kept sending her out that Elena realized something was up. It felt like busy work–the type of work Massimo gave out to keep Elena away from trouble. But why?
Massimo didn’t trust Elena’s judgment around Sloane and Noah. The realization stung more than it should have. “All good, Doc?” Gavino asked.
Elena nodded. She should’ve been paying more careful attention to her patient, but this was the third time she was visiting Gavino and his wife. “You’re all set,” she said cheerfully.
“And Emi?” he asked. “She said she felt a little wiped out after those flu shots you gave her last time.”
“Your wife’s vitals are all fine,” Elena replied. “Try to drink more fluids next time, and that shouldn’t happen.” “Thank you, Doctor,” Gavino’s wife, Emi, said.
As Elena packed up, she couldn’t help but overhear the two’s conversation. Apparently, they were trying to decide whether to invite Emi’s parents over for the winter holidays.
“I don’t like how they act like they should just get invited,” Gavino confessed. “Real family will wait for you to make that choice–and respect that choice, no matter what.”
“I know,” Emi said. “I just can’t picture celebrating New Years without them.”
“Doctor, what do you think?” Gavino called. “Have you and the boss had your parents over for holidays before?”
“And do you think they respected both of your boundaries during those holidays?” Emi pressed.

Elena couldn’t think of a lie fast enough. “Not yet,” Elena replied. “We’re… still talking it over.”
“And your family isn’t mad about that?” Ga
pressed.

“Leave her alone, love,” Emi said. “It’s clear they wouldn’t tell her if they were–they’re her family.”
Elena still thought about that conversation as she rode the bus and then walked back to the estate. Though the couple argued, they were so certain loved ones would wait and respect their decisions.
Elena looked at her personal phone. There were plenty of messages from Alessia, but they weren’t constant. It favors or meetups or the like–and then promptly forgot seemed like her stepmother only texted her to ask
Elena existed.
Meanwhile on her work phone, Sloane had sent one or two texts daily since her appearance. Simple things, like a ” good morning” or “hope your day goes well.” Nothing Elena ever felt pressure to respond to.
Elena finally understood. Massimo wasn’t testing Elena’s loyalty by giving her busy work–he was testing Sloane’s.
Elena knocked on Massimo’s office door.
“I’d like to meet up with Sloane again,” Elena said plainly.
“So long as you use your time wisely,” Massimo replied. “We’re in the middle of planning a big winter party. I don’t need you overworked–make sure you still have time to rest.”
Elena smiled. She pulled out her work phone and texted her mother.
“Are you good to hang out at the Ferraro estate tomorrow?”
“Of course!” her mother immediately replied.
