Chapter 255
Massimo politely says goodbye and sends off Sloane and Noah with Elena. He can’t even summon up any anger ar Elena’s promise to meet up with them later. He hadn’t expected her to make a loophole in her promise, but that’s
on him.
He had forgotten that Elena had been playing the part of Mafia Queen for a while now–and had been a mafia doctor and daughter of a mafia family for even longer.
And when he was cautioning Elena to be careful, Massimo wasn’t acting as Mafia King. He was acting like a concerned lover–constantly thinking about what a fragile woman Elena was. He had completely forgotten how stubborn she could be.
Which was what was really unexpected–that Massimo could forget something so important and therefore lower his guard. How many deals had Massimo made with hardened criminals, mafia men who would sooner kill than lose a little bit of cash or respect? How many deals had Massimo exploited similar weaknesses to his benefit? Sure, he made the mafia–wide rule about honoring deals ironclad and respected, but that didn’t make Massimo some guardian angel. If someone was stupid enough to make a bad deal, that was their problem.
And the Mafia King could not afford to make bad deals. He could not be careless or lack cunning or be stupid. That’s all Massimo could think about as he returned to his office. He loved Elena, but she could just as easily make him into a fool as a genius. She could point out his weaknesses and help strengthen them, but she also was a weakness.
Elena was Massimo’s biggest weak point.
Massimo pulled up the email Tyler had sent him through a fake email. He didn’t watch the video again–he couldn’t–but he thought about what it had shown.
It was clear Tyler also knew Elena was Massimo’s weak spot.
Massimo gritted his teeth. If Tyler was cruel enough to make this video in the first place, he would certainly stoop so low as to recruit Elena’s biological mother–or someone who looks like her–to manipulate Elena. Massimo had to be absolutely sure Sloane and Noah were who they claimed to be and that they wouldn’t ever hurt Elena.
Massimo would need to look into them quietly. He didn’t want them or Tyler or even Elena to know.
Now was as good a time as any to start.
Upstairs, Elena too remained awake. Today had been full of too many shocks and surprises for her to fall asleep. Try as she might, Elena couldn’t stop thinking about her mother.
After another hour of restlessness, Elena picked up her personal phone. She decided that she might as well see if her husband was awake.
“How are you doing?” she texted.
Immediately, her phone buzzed. So Max was still awake. Elena smiled.
“Fine. Got a bunch of last minute work to do,” he replied.
Another buzz.
“Why are you still up?” he asked.
“Thinking about families.”

Chapter 255
“Oh?”
“Do you ever think about your parents?”
+25 Bongs
When Max didn’t immediately respond, Elena bit her lip. She knew Max was raised by his grandfather, but he hadn’t ever said much about why that was–or what happened to his parents. Maybe this was a sore spot for him.
But then her phone buzzed again, and Elena was too busy reading Max’s own words to think about anything else.
“Not really,” Max’s text read. “I don’t really look back. I’m too busy to be focused on anything but the present and future.”
“Besides,” Max continued, “I hardly remember my parents anyways. There’s not really much point in thinking about them.”
“That’s sad,” Elena replied. “I’m sorry I brought it up.”
“Don’t be. I don’t think it’s sad anyways–just a fact of life. Besides, you wanted to talk about this for a reason, right?”
Elena smiled. Max could be very perceptive sometimes.
“I was raised by my father and stepmother,” Elena explained, “so I didn’t even know if my mother was alive until recently. She recently re–entered my life, and I very much want to have a normal mother–daughter relationship with her.”
“Do you really think you can have that normal relationship, or do you just want it because you’ve never had it?”
Elena thought about it for a long moment.
“I don’t know,” Elena confessed. “I don’t think I’ll ever really get that normal relationship with her, but I want to try for it. My younger self would never forgive me if I turned my mother away now–it’d feel like the worst kind of betrayal.”
