Massimo pulled up Sloane’s file. Very little came up on Sloane Vitale’s background check. It was like all traces of her disappeared after she abandoned her husband and left New York.

Massimo scoffed at the practically blank documents. It was clear Noah had used his money and power to wipe most of Sloane’s history. Even searching for Sloane Winslow wasn’t any better–everything before her marriage to Noah Winslow was suspiciously blank.

Massimo sighed. This meant he would have to rely on stories from other New York mafia families. Because while money could erase digital footprints and legal problems, it couldn’t erase people’s memories.

The mafia don had a hunch his background check on Sloane might be useless, so he had already started contacting mafia members–discretely, of course. And, of course, there were the records Massimo’s own grandfather had from around the time Sloane had abandoned the Vitales. Massimo picked up the aged binder from one of the bookshelves and flipped through it until he found what he was looking for.

Sloane may not have liked her life in the mafia, but she was only able to leave because she stole some assets from her husband–mostly cash, jewelry, and some small art pieces. Fabio had documented every piece she had stolen -well, Elena’s father had documented it all and sent it to Fabio’s subordinates. Massimo’s eyes widened as he went down the list.

Sloane hadn’t bankrupted the Vitales, but her theft could certainly be blamed for the family’s eventual decline. She may not have single–handedly caused the Vitales‘ ruin, but she had helped.

For a dark moment, Massimo wondered if Elena’s father would’ve still been so desperate to sell Elena to Tyler if he hadn’t been robbed so many years ago. If Sloane had stayed, could Elena have had both a mother and a normal life?

Though Elena would hate to admit it, she was getting used to receiving and putting on blind folds. Truly, the only odd thing was that Max had waited so late to deliver the plain box.

“Don’t get impatient,” he had scolded her over text. “It’ll be worth the wait.”

So Elena waited, trading text messages with her lover, until the sun went down. Only then did she get a message telling her to go outside and put on her blindfold.

It felt like an eternity until Elena heard familiar footsteps approach her.

“Are you ready for our date?” Max asked her.

“I’ve been ready the entire day,” Elena replied. evening!”

Elena decided to take pity on her husband. He did sound upset that he hadn’t arrived sooner.

“Where are we going?” Elena asked.

Elena could hear the smile in Max’s voice. “A midnight picnic.”

It took a while to drive to Max’s picnic–and then longer to walk there. With no light, Elena fully relied on Max to guide her to their picnic blanket.

“Are the stars even out tonight?” Elena asked.

“I wish I could see it,” Elena replied.

“Lay down,” Max suggested.

Though Elena scoffed, she obeyed. Suddenly, there was a hand on her chest–right over her heart. She was intimately aware of how fast–and loud–it was beating.

“There,” Max replied. “Now you can feel it–the most beautiful, important star of the universe is right here.”

Elena hoped the blindfold and the night’s darkness helped hide her blush. She cleared her throat nervously.

“Can the most important star get some water?” she asked.

Max laughed. “Sure.”

The date went by too quickly, as all dates with Max did. Elena was suddenly annoyed that she had a tea party the next morning.

“Are you sure you have to go?” Max asked as he dropped her off at the estate.

“Unfortunately,” Elena replied. “I have work early tomorrow.”

“Sleep well then,” Max said. “Until our next date.”

“You too,” Elena replied. “Thanks for dropping me off. Though, actually, I do have a question for you.”

“Sure,” Max replied easily.

“How did you find out where I lived?” Elena asked. “I don’t recall telling you about that… Or some other details you’ve mentioned before actually.”
