Chapter 259
Massimo felt like he couldn’t breathe. Had he messed up? Did Elena suspect his real identity?
He forced himself to calm down. He looked at Elena’s face. Though he couldn’t fully make out her expression since she was still wearing a blindfold, she didn’t seem suspicious or angry.
No, she seemed confused. Which meant that Massimo could still convince her that nothing was wrong.
“Given all the pictures you’re sent and your own description of the place, it was easy to find,” Massimo smoothly lied. “There’s only one mansion this giant in New York City. I’ll admit I did want to surprise you the first time I came over, but I guess it would’ve been simpler to ask you rather than look at a bunch of rich people’s houses on g ****e maps.”
Elena smiled, but it’s too small. She believed his explanation, but she’s clearly still thinking of something else that “Max” shouldn’t know.
“What were the ‘other details‘ I mentioned before?” Massimo asked.
“Back on our date at the diner,” Elena stated. “You didn’t seem surprised when I mentioned my half–brother was in the hospital–or that I even had a half–brother.”
Had he? Shit. Massimo was going to have to sit down and really make sure he kept his life as the Mafia King and his life as Elena’s husband separate–he couldn’t keep making these mistakes.
“Oh,” Massimo remarked, stalling to think of a lie. “Well… I heard it from my grandfather. You must have told him at some point–I mean, you two used to be neighbors, I’m sure it came up at some point.”
Massimo stayed deathly quiet as he waited for Elena to respond. He hated that he couldn’t look into her eyes and instantly know what she was thinking. Her thoughts and feelings always spilled out through her gorgeous eyes.
Elena let out a breathy laugh. “Yeah, it must have,” she said. “Sorry for the mini interrogation.”
Massimo smiled. “You had me really scared for a minute there,” he said jokingly. “Do you talk to your patients like that?”
“Only if they deserve it,” Elena said with a smile.
“Scary.” Massimo stared at Elena for a long moment–but he knew he couldn’t stay any longer. “Goodnight, Doctor of Terrors.”
“Wait!” Elena called. “Come closer for a second.”
Massimo raised an eyebrow but obeyed. Elena’s hand reached for Massimo’s face. Her hand slowly caressed his chin and moved upward–stopping at his lips.
Elena stood and tip–toes and then, all at once, kissed him.
It was perfect.
Elena was kissing him. Her hands were wrapped around his shoulders, and she was trying to pull him closer–and Massimo wanted her to. He wanted Elena so much at that moment, it physically hurt.
He pulled away. “That should do for a good night kiss,” Massimo said simply.
“But-
“I don’t want to pressure you into doing anything you don’t want,” Massimo continued. “And trust me, if that kiss

went on any longer, I wouldn’t be able to keep my hands off you.”
Elena felt flustered. Her cheeks were red and her lips stung with the cold night air. But most of all, her heart burned with want.
Yet she could hear the logic in Max’s words. He was a man after all, so it was only natural he had such urges. They might be married, but Elena still didn’t know what Max looked like–a woman wouldn’t want her first time to be with a stranger.
Yet Elena felt deeply connected to Max. And though he was trying to contain his own passion, Elena wanted him to let it loose. She wanted him to claim her as his wife.
It was overwhelming and even absurd. They weren’t even two full months into Max’s three month ultimatum, and Elena was already madly and fully in love with him. She was as certain of her love as she was certain that grass was green or that the sun rises in the east.
The only uncertainty in their love was whether their relationship could last if Max never overcame his shyness and she never saw his face.
With great reluctance, Elena controlled her own passion. She did have work to do tomorrow, and it was already late.
