Chapter 261
“You thought the Zegna family could handle securing enough wine?” Massimo asked, looking over their list.
“Yes, Amelia seemed confident about it,” Elena confirmed. She frowned suddenly. “Though now that we’re looking it over, the Adami family might take that as a slight…”
“Seeing as they own the most wineries in the country, they definitely would. What if the Zegnas were in charge of table settings instead? Their silver mining finally turned a profit this year.”
Elena worried her bottom lip. “No, the DeSantis should handle the silverware. Maybe just wine glasses—they have a lot of stained glass in their estate?”
“Let’s go with that then.”
It took hours to come up with a list of what each family would be in charge of. They couldn’t risk having any duplicate responsibilities–that would look like Massimo was pitting the families against each other. And they needed to take into account each family’s skills, reputation, and temperament–they couldn’t risk offending anyone or look like they were playing favorites.
Once the list was made, they then had to send it out. Then there was the waiting game of whether the families
not. If anyone declined, Massimo and Elena would have to then redivide the

Coordinating an event on this scale was a lot of work.
Each time Elena opened the mail box, she felt nervous. What if a family felt slighted they had been only asked to provide napkins instead of something grand like ice sculptures? What if she and Massimo had overestimated a family’s capabilities or timeliness and had to scramble to get everything up to the Ferraro standard?
As Elena and Luca kept careful track of every mafia family’s response and update on progress, she quickly realized just how grand this winter hunting party was going to be. It would be nothing like Tyler’s cruise that had once overwhelmed her or the huge party for Gavino’s wedding.
It would be gigantic–mythic almost. This winter hunting party was going to be talked about for years to come.
Elena just hoped it would all go according to plan.
Massimo looked over the report Elena had given him. He frowned as he turned to the last page. Elena couldn’t blame him–she understood his frustration all too well.
Massimo sighed. “We’ve got branch families in Italy who have already begun work, yet we still don’t have a single response from families in Massachusetts and Maine?”
“The Bonettis did just have a death in the family,” Elena defended. “But as for the families in Massachusetts…” “They’re just being petty?” Massimo supplied. “Even after I showed them leniency rather than all–out war.” “Maybe they don’t think it’s a genuine offer?” Elena suggested. “What if we visit them–and some other families in nearby states who have yet to confirm–and talk to them in person?”
Massimo steepled his fingers. He thought for a long moment.
“It’s worth a try,” he finally said. “You can have Luca bring around one of the smaller cars and then head out for the day.”
“Already?” Elena asked. “Don’t you think it would be better if both the Mafia King and Queen showed up to these

“Don’t you have dinner plans with your mother though?” Massimo asked right back. “These meetings could run long, and then you’d be late.”
Elena could, silently, admit that Massimo had a point. But there was another reason she absolutely couldn’t let Massimo go on these meetings alone–even if it would signal peace to other mafia dons.
“Tyler’s allies are in that area, aren’t they?” Elena asked slowly. “I’d rather be there–just in case you need a doctor on short notice. Not that I think these families are planning something bad–I mean, if I thought that, I would’ve insisted we give them smaller tasks that were basically meaningless, but-”
“Alright,” Massimo cut in, surprisingly gentle. “We’ll both go.”
To Elena’s great relief, the drive to Massachusetts was uneventful. In fact, most of the conversations with other mafia dons even went well.
Or as well as could be expected.
it wasn’t like any mafia family could turn away the Mafia King and Queen–even if they did show up unannounced at their doorstep. And when the Mafia King insists on speaking to a mafia don–one–on–one, alone–only the most foolish would deny him.
