Chapter 262
After the first don they visited nearly fainted, Elena insisted that they at least meet up with each don and their wife. That seemed to help case the tension–not completely get rid of it, but still. It was much clearer that Massimo wasn’t going to try to kill anyone.
Elena hated Massimo’s reputation as a blood–thirsty killer. It was really working against his interests in unity today.
It took too long to convince Don Valentino that they really did just want his help on re–tiling the banquet floors or that they just wanted Don Gentile to send some of his renowned orchestra players to provide music. Beneath their polite smiles, Elena could tell these dons were worried that Massimo was planning bloody revenge for some slight. In these moments, Elena did her best to chat with the don’s wives and make small talk–compliment their living rooms, bring up accomplishments their children made that year, anything that would convince them that this visit was nothing more than friendly business.
But then they would visit some of the other dons, and Elena was filled with doubt. She wondered if her suggestion to come in peace was really the best idea.
Because some dons wouldn’t smile as Elena tried to charm their wives or daughters. They would hide their disgust behind a thin grin and turn back to Massimo with excuses.
“Business has been poor this year,” Don Sala claimed. “I don’t see why you would insist my family help with the festivities unless you want to bankrupt us.”
“I’m afraid I’m too busy,” Don Esposito insisted.
“Surely the Ferraros have this handled without us,” Don Tarantino said slyly
Elena could catch the vitriol and hatred left unspoken–barely hidden under the false excuses. Tyler building his new fortress in Massachusetts had emboldened some families. And despite the fact Massimo had only chosen to tax all families in the state rather than start a war, few were grateful.
Most conversations were fraught. Several times, Elena kept her hands in her lap to hide their shaking. She could feel the killing intent resting, threatening to spill over.
Massimo and Elena walked out the D’Amico estate. Massimo kept his face neutral, even as they walked outside. He could tell though that Elena was having trouble hiding her disappoin
“I can’t believe we got another ‘maybe‘—and after talking for so long,” Elena whispered.
Massimo could only shrug. Honestly, he hadn’t been expecting to get as many dons on board their plan as they had –though Massimo knew he had Elena’s charm and wit to thank for that. She had done an excellent job of putting the more anxious families at ease.
If only Elena would give herself credit for that help.
These visits had been about checking up on the dons as much as prepping the winter party. Visiting with no warning meant the mafia families couldn’t hide assets or disguise any new renovations they had made.
Massimo had been checking for signs of war at the same time he was offering peace. After all, a Mafia King cannot be a fool.
“We made out okay,” Massimo said simply. “Now let’s get you back home-”
Massimo stopped as he looked at his car.

Elena didn’t finish her sentence–she was too surprised by Massimo suddenly pulling her backwards. He silently gestured for her to keep quiet. And though Elena was obviously confused, she did.
The tires of his car had been slashed. And if someone was brave enough to slash the Mafia King’s tires, they definitely were brave enough to do something more dangerous.
Massimo pulled Elena down behind the D’Amico’s nearby dog house just as bullets began to fly.
Elena hated this. She would never get used to gun fights.
Massimo took out his gun and fired plenty of shots. It sounded like Massimo was somehow winning, but the fight wasn’t over.
“Fuck,” Massimo swore. “They have a damn sniper. I can’t reach the bastard at this distance.”
Elena looked around. She could see plenty of men lying in their own blood. But more importantly, she spotted a red headed figure running down the side street.
“That must be Tyler’s woman,” she said as she pointed her out.
“Great, but I’m kinda busy making sure we don’t die.”
Elena made a reckless decision. Careful to stick to the natural cover of some trees, she bolted after the woman.
