Chapter 270
So many mafia families knew her face now–and so many more had heard stories about her. Elena wondered if there was any way for her to actually escape the mafia life now.
She had wanted to help Massimo, but had Elena accidentally ruined her own life in the process?
“Hey,” Sloane said in a calming voice, “don’t panic, Elena.”
Her mother wrapped her in a comforting hug. She leaned in close so she could whisper in her daughter’s ear.
“Noah and I could make that a non–issue. We have enough money and resources to make it so you disappear from the mafia life completely,” Sloane reassured. “So let me ask you one more time, what’s stopping you from leaving right now, Elena?”
Massimo was surprised Noah was actually as handy as he claimed to be. It was nice to work on a project with someone else–even if it was fixing something as simple as a toaster or as complicated as one of Fabio’s old motorcycles. Noah didn’t mind letting Massimo take charge–the man simply followed in his footsteps and offered a few suggestions every now and again.
It was nice. It made the basement feel less empty.
Massimo could faintly recall seeing his father tinker with machines, occasionally interrupted by Fabio. And thought the old man would curse and complain, Fabio would eventually help–or just stay quiet and keep his son company.
Massimo had almost forgotten those moments. They were so old and barely remembered that Massimo was surprised he could still recall them.
If this was anything like how Elena felt seeing Sloane, Massimo could understand why she was so desperate to have a mother. Elena was working so hard to get to know Sloane now–was she trying to rekindle similarly vague memories? Was she trying to recapture those small moments of joy?
Massimo hoped Elena succeeded. She deserved to have such happiness in her life.
Watching Noah work, Massimo couldn’t help thinking how different Noah was from what Massimo expected. Noah was everything a mafia man wasn’t. Yet somehow, Noah had managed to make and keep his fortune.
This fact vexed Massimo as much as it impressed him. He both liked and hated that there were such different ways to be successful beyond the teachings Fabio made him take to heart.
“Should we get down to business?” Noah asked suddenly. “You never called, so now seems as good a time as any to talk about that business deal I first offered you.”
Massimo frowned. “That deal was genuine?” Massimo asked.
“Of course,” Noah said, like what he offered Massimo wasn’t ridiculous. “I’m more than willing to lend you clean money and business connections. From what my wife overheard, you probably want those even more now–what with the feds preparing a case against you.”
Massimo gritted his teeth. Noah was right, of course. He didn’t like the fact that Elena had apparently told Sloane about the rumors of a federal case, but that was besides the point..
Clean money, made completely legally, would be useful in dodging the cops. They would be watching his dirty money too closely–which meant it would be too risky to use most of the Ferraro’s vast fortune on anything like bribing a few government officials to bury the federal case.

But such an offer would come at a great cost to Noah. So why would he offer to essentially lose millions?
