Chapter 269
The dinner between Sloane, Noah, Elena, and Massimo appeared to be going well. No one had started a fight, everyone laughed and smiled at each other, and no one even glared at anyone!
But only the servants would think it was actually going well. To Elena, who was paying much closer attention, the dinner was going… okay.
Sloane mostly paid attention to Noah or Elena. While Elena was pleased to have her mother’s attention and be asked plenty of questions about her likes and interests, the doctor was a little disappointed. She did want Sloane and Massimo to get along.
Since Sloane was refusing to engage with Massimo–and Massimo’s social skills were still a little lacking–that left Elena to try to jumpstart their friendship all on her own. At least, Elena expected things to go that way.
But surprisingly, Noah seemed to be warming up to Massimo. The rich man didn’t even flinch when Massimo talked about boring legal stuff–Noah expertly redirected the conversation to something everyone could enjoy. “Merger paperwork is brutal. That reminds me of a trip we took down in Florida,” Noah would start. Then moments later, everyone would be smiling at the silly story.
Elena could see why her mother liked this man so much. It was easy to be happy around him.
“Luckily, the next time we visited, Noah had already learned how to fix a golf cart,” Sloane stated, back in a good mood.
“I refuse to be bested by the same problem twice,” Noah agreed.
“Are you the handyman type?” Elena asked. When he nodded, Elena smiled wide. “That’s so funny–so Massimo.”
“Really?” Noah asked.
“I’m no mechanic, but I know a few things,” Massimo said vaguely, waving his hand dismissively.
“He knows more than a few things,” Elena insisted. “He has the whole basement dedicated to ‘just tinkering with some things.“”
“Damn,” Noah said appreciatively. “I should pick your brain on a few things sometime.”
“Or now,” Sloane suggested. “You two boys can head downstairs for some bonding while I catch up with Elena.”
“Isn’t it a little early for that?” Massimo asked.
“We’ve finished the main course,” Sloane pointed out. “I for one can’t eat even dessert right now.”
“I wouldn’t mind working up an appetite before we resumed,” Noah agreed.
Massimo looked at Elena. She understood what he was silently asking–do you want to talk to your mother alone? So Elena slowly nodded her head once.
“Alright,” Massimo said with a sigh. “Let’s go Noah–though don’t be disappointed if my setup is underwhelming.”
As soon as the men were gone, Sloane switched seats to be next to Elena.
“Do you mean what you said yesterday?” Sloane asked quietly–too quiet for the servants standing at the doorway to hear. “About only staying with Massimo until you raise enough money?”

Elena nodded.
“Alright,” Sloane said. “So what’s the plan?”
Elena blinked. “That’s pretty much the whole plan,” Elena said simply.
Sloane’s eyes widened. “But what about actionable steps?” Sloane hissed.
When Elena stayed silent, her mother took a deep breath. She refilled her glass of wine and took a sip.
“Elena,” Sloane said solemnly, “you need to have a real plan with steps–not just a goal. And as I see it now, you haven’t been taking any real steps to leave.”
Elena frowned. She knew her mother was right–Elena herself had this revelation a while ago, back in her half- brother’s hospital room. But Elena wasn’t sure what to do.
“I’m just not sure what those steps should be,” Elena complained. “And I am sure that wherever I go, I’m going to need money.”
“Sure,” Sloane agreed, “but money doesn’t mean anything if it’s just sitting in your bank account. And goodness knows I didn’t leave with enough funds. If you really wanted out, you could just leave right now, Elena.”
That startled Elena. The idea felt so very wrong that Elena immediately started shaking her head.
“Mom, I’m known as the Mafia Queen now,” Elena stated. Elena knew how important that title was–and how much that title could completely ruin her getaway. “If I’m not careful, things could go very badly for me.”
