"We haven't," she finally said. "Though honestly, I only ever became a doctor to make a lot of money."
"Elena," Massimo said seriously, forcing her to look him in the eyes. "You would not be the best damn doctor I've ever seen if you were just in this for the money. That might have been why you started in this profession, but it's not why you're still here."
Elena felt her cheeks begin to flush. She needed to change the topic—she couldn't handle her icy boss paying her so many compliments.
Besides, she needed to get to the heart of the issue.
"But as far as the deal goes," Elena said, "are you planning on taking—"
Luca burst into the dining room. "There's a mafia firefight up in Albany, New York. I haven't gotten a lot of details yet, but it's sounding bad—"
Massimo's expression instantly soured. "That's near the border of the state," he replied.
Elena knew what that meant. This could be Tyler's doing.
"Let's head out," Massimo commanded.
Luca drove Massimo and Elena to warehouse district in Albany. Luca wasn't exaggerated when he said it was bad.
Elena could never have been prepared to see so much blood. People's organs were ripped open from knife and bullet wounds. So many limbs were bent at impossible angles.
And that's just what she could spot from the car window as Luca parked the vehicle.
"It seems like a drug deal gone wrong," Luca explained. As they got closer, he had to yell to be heard over the sounds of all out war. "The fighting spiraled from there."
Elena willed her hands to stop shaking. She took a deep breath, clutched her medical bag, and placed her hand on the car door—
Only to have Massimo's larger hand stop her.
"Stay in the car," he said, voice low and serious. "That's an order, Doctor Vitale."
It was weird seeing him with a bullet proof vest on and his jacket carelessly thrown off to the side. She never noticed how blindingly white his dress shirts normally wore, but without the jacket to hide it, Elena could appreciate its clean color now. She could also see the hidden gun holsters strapped at his sides.
On a good day, Massimo was prepared for a fight. Today, he was prepared for war.
Wordlessly, Massimo and Luca left the car.
Elena stayed silent on the floor of the car for a long while. But she soon realized not being able to see what was going on made all the noises she heard sound worse.
But Elena also knew she shouldn't stay by the car's windows when bullets were flying everywhere.
She decided to take out her personal phone and text her husband.
"Are you free right now?" she texted.
A second later, Elena heard Massimo's phone buzzing from inside his suit jacket's pocket.
