Chapter 29
For a brief moment, Massimo thought he was mistaken. The woman in front of him eyed him with both confusion and suspicion. But then, her green eyes brightened.
She laughed. “Sorry, you caught me off guard,” she said as he sat down. “I thought you were a very forward stranger for a second.”
Massimo pushed in his wife’s chair before returning to his own seat. She had a point–it’s not like they had ever met in person before. If his wife hadn’t sent a picture of her dress, he would’ve never recognized her.
“I apologize if I startled you,” he said solemnly.
His wife waved her hand dismissively. “And I’m so sorry if you were waiting for too long. Traffic was a nightmare.
“I
Massimo should’ve expected the small talk, but he was still out of practice. “Is city traffic ever not?” he replied automatically.
Massimo could already hear his grandfather chiding his lack of charm.
“No,” his wife replied, her smile perfectly in place, “but I rarely get to meet a well–dressed man afterwards, so I’ll forgive the public transit system today.”
Or maybe Massimo had more charm than he thought? A beautiful woman was clearly flirting with him. His wife had never been so forward over text, but Massimo didn’t mind this new confidence.
“So,” his wife continued, “do I get to know your name now that we’re meeting in person, or should I just call you Mine?”
His wife was definitely more forward in person–was she an anxious texter or was this confidence all fake? Massimo couldn’t say for certain, but he suspected it was the latter. His own heart, after all, was beating fast.
“Massimo,” he said after a long moment. “My name is Massimo.”
His wife whistled appreciatively. “A fitting name for someone so handsome. My name’s Aria.”
“It’s nice to meet you,
Aria.”
“Likewise, though,” she said, leaning in closer, “I feel like ‘ve gotten to know you a lot over the phone. But I’m excited to learn more.”
Massimo nodded. It was hard to look at Aria directly–she was like a star with how radiantly she commanded attention. It was humbling to have her full attention.
“Oh,” Aria said breathily, “I almost forgot. I changed my number, so could I borrow your phone and update it?”
Again Massimo nodded mutely. He fished out his phone from his jacket, unlocked it, and gave it to her.
Once she had the phone, Aria leaned back. Her brow furrowed in total concentration as she tapped at the screen.
And kept tapping at the screen.
“Are you alright?” Massimo asked. How could someone her age be taking this long? Even Fabio, old as he was, would only need a moment to update a phone number.
Aria tapped away some more before turning off the phone and handing it back to Massimo.
“Sorry,” she said, pulling some of her strands of red hair in front her face–a nervous tick perhaps? “It’s hard to focus with someone so charming looking at you, y’know?”

It was Massimo’s turn for his face to turn red. “So long as the number is right, it’s fine,” he mumbled. Aria smiled again. “Don’t worry, it is. Have you ordered any food or wine yet?”
“No, I was waiting for you.”
“How sweet. Let’s decide on some drinks and apps, and then you can tell me all about the wonders of being a mechanic–sound good?”
