“I’m very sorry,” Elena started saying.

But the man interrupted her. “Elena? Elena Vitale, is that you?”

Elena squinted as she tried to place this man in her mind. But no, she hadn’t met anyone like him recently. Yet there was something familiar about his dirty blonde hair and brown eyes…

The man only smiled. “It’s me, Joshua Millers. We went to school together? You totally saved my butt on our science project for Mr. Ford’s class?”

Elena gasped. “Oh my gosh, Joshua. Hi, what are you doing here?”

How many hours had Elena spent mapping out his freckles during boring lectures? How many times had she taken the long route to her classes, just so she could pass by his locker? And yet Elena hadn’t recognized the mop of hair she had fantasized about playing with during all of middle school.

This was more than a little embarrassing.

To her credit, Joshua had had shot up like a tree since the last time they met. Not to mention filling out his form- his suit might have been cheap, but it fit him almost as if it had been tailored perfectly. He looked good.

He also looked very happy to run into a forgettable former classmate.

“I have to run over some paperwork,” Joshua said. He seemed to only now realize his briefcase was on the ground. He quickly picked it up with an awkward chuckle.

“I work as an attorney now.”

Elena’s eyes widened “Really? What happened to taking over your parents‘ store?”

“We got bought out by a bigger company–it’s actually how I managed to afford law school. And what are you doing here?”

“Oh, there was a car pileup on main street, so I helped out and gave the cops a first–hand report.”

Joshua frowned. “That couldn’t have been easy–or quick. Have you gotten dinner?”

“No, but-”

“Then let me treat you,” Joshua said quickly.

Elena, tired as she was, didn’t have the strength to refuse him. “So long as it’s quick.”

Joshua took Elena to a nearby twenty–four hour diner. Soon enough, Elena was nursing a fresh cup of coffee and ordering the chicken surprise special–it was the cheapest thing on the menu.

“It really has been too long,” Joshua said, settling into his chair. “I hope you’re doing okay?”

“I’m alright,” Elena insisted. “I got my doctorate in medicine and I’m practicing now.”

“Congrats! That’s no small feat.”

“Neither is getting your law degree,” Elena shot back with grin.

Joshua grinned back. “True, we’re both probably working long hours and seeing some crazy stuff, right?”

“Definitely.”

Joshua sighed suddenly. “Hopefully things will get easier son. It’s hard—with all the crime elements, I mean.
