"We can save your real first time for later, yeah?"
Those words still ran through Elena's head like a broken record. She could still feel the stains of what they'd done in her drenched underlayers.
Weren't they both on the same page? Didn't Max want a real marriage—a real partnership with Elena?
But Elena could only shake her head at the thought. According to Mr. Fabio, her husband's real name wasn't even Max.
As Elena sat in the hotel's lobby, she could only wait in horrified silence and wonder if she might have misjudged her husband entirely.
Massimo waited anxiously at home. He wasn't even in his office but the entryway.
Elena still hadn't returned.
He could understand her taking her time, but surely a cab should've dropped her off by now? Even if she hadn't wanted to ride home with her husband, there was no reason for Elena to delay arriving at the estate.
Which meant something might've happened to her...
Or Massimo had misjudged the situation entirely. It wouldn't be the first time this evening it happened.
Massimo frowned. It was clear he needed to do something—if only for his peace of mind.
He took out his phone. Elena... probably wouldn't answer a call from Max, so Massimo decided to call her as himself.
To his surprise, Elena picked up immediately.
"Hello?" Elena asked. "Is there an emergency?"
"Is there?" Massimo shot back. "It's nearly four in the morning. I thought you would be back from your... personal engagements."
Inwardly, Massimo chided himself. He wasn't supposed to know about Elena's date—just that she had the evening off for personal business. While Elena didn't have a large social circle, Massimo couldn't slip up and reveal information only her husband would know.
It just made Elena feel more alone.
"I should go," Elena finally said.
"If you're sure..." Sloane replied. "But I have enough space if you want to stay the night."
"No, it's fine," Elena said. She forced herself to smile. "Really."
"Okay. Stay safe, Elena."
As Elena entered the hotel's elevator, she spotted a familiar figure already there.
"Elena?" Joshua Miller asked. "What a surprise to see you here."
