The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 293

"Joshua," Elena replied slowly. "Yes, it is a surprise to see you as well."

Elena knew Joshua was a respected prosecutor, but she knew he wasn't nearly wealthy enough to rent a room at this expensive hotel casually. And why would he, when he presumably had a house or apartment nearby?

She also knew Joshua's family no longer lived in New York —they'd started the process of moving back to Colorado at the end of her and Joshua's middle school years. Were they in town and visiting? But surely, they were enough like Joshua to not waste on luxury hotel rooms?

Joshua must've noticed Elena's thoughtful expression. He leaned against the back of the elevator and sighed before explaining, "I was going over a contract with a client —and he wasn't making it easy. There's definitely a solid case, but I swear, I had to go over every clause ten times before he understood a word of what I was saying."

Elena smiled sympathetically. She could relate.

Back when she was working at the Ferraro's hospital, she must've had dozens of patients who made her work harder by questioning every little thing. Sometimes it felt like she was being pressed on the tiniest details solely because someone didn't believe a woman could be an expert doctor. It happened less frequently now that she was the Mafia Queen —and therefore above questioning, at least in polite society —but the memories of those encounters hadn't faded.

"And you?" Joshua asked. "Are you still working right now, or are you turning in for the night?"

Elena swallowed thickly. "I'm heading home for the night, yes," Elena replied, hoping that Joshua wouldn't pick up on how specifically she chose her words.

She felt so tired. If the fact that she hadn't thought about the obvious answer for Joshua's presence being work—she could count on one hand the number of people more dedicated to their jobs than Joshua, and they were all Ferraro mafia men—hadn't made that obvious, it became clear as the elevator opened to the lobby floor and the darkness of night was on full display.

Normally, when Elena stayed up this late, it was for a good reason—a mafia mission, a patient needing help, or a stolen moment of peace and quiet with a loved companion. The hour felt heavier with so much sadness in Elena's heart.

But to Elena's great confusion, they weren't at the Ferraro estate yet.

Joshua muttered something Elena doesn't quite catch and gets out of the car. As he waled away, she finally took in their new surroundings and spotted Joshua's destination—a food truck. Within a few minutes, he returned with a tinfoil-wrapped breakfast burrito.

"Here," he said, pushing the burrito onto her and using his free hand to buckle his seat belt.

Elena looked at the meal, confused.

"For old time's sake," Joshua explained. Without another word, he restarted the car and got them back on route to the Ferraro estate.
