The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 305

Elena held her breath, her eyes never leaving her husband's. Not for the first time, she wished she could make out his expression.

Her phone rang for just a moment. And then, to her surprise, the call connected.

Her husband hadn't moved at all.

"Hello?" Elena said into her phone, wondering if she had just caught Massimo's answering machine. Though her boss normally had left his phone's volume on, perhaps he had decided to silence it before this date—or maybe after the call from Noah?

"Yes?" Massimo's voice replied, a little distorted from the phone's mic. "What is it?"

Elena's eyes never moved from her husband sitting across from her. While she couldn't make out many details, she would've noticed if he had taken out his phone again.

More importantly, he would hear his voice speaking from across the table.

"I just wanted to confirm you got the documents I left on your desk," Elena said smoothly.

"Is that it?" Massimo replied, clearly annoyed. He waited a moment before properly replying. "Yes. Can we talk more about this later? I'm busy."

Elena covered the mic of her own phone. The result of this final test was so different that Elena needed to fully confirm the truth—that Max and Massimo were indeed two different people.

"Max," Elena called softly, "could you refill my champagne please?"

"Yeah," Max replied immediately. He took Elena's glass in one hand and the bottle of champagne in the other.

As he poured, Massimo spoke up again. "Elena?" he asked. "Is that it?"

No phone in sight with her husband. He was fully engaged in a different task, and Massimo was still talking on the phone.

"Yes," Elena replied. "Sorry, have a good night."

As soon as she said good night, Massimo hung up. He must really be busy.

"Elena, your glass?" Max said.

"Only if a certain number calls me," Massimo corrected. "And it's not you who needs to answer, but me."

Massimo gestured to the program he had running on his computer. There were thousands of pre-recorded sentences and phrases, all meticulously labeled. All Luca had to do was plug in Massimo's phone and play one of those voice clips.

It would sound like Massimo was talking directly into the phone.

"I know part of what makes me valuable is that I don't ask questions, sir," Luca began, "but—"

"Don't start now then," Massimo warned.

"But," Luca repeated, "this all feels very... overkill."

Luca did have a point. Just looking at the sheer amount of voice clips was overwhelming. But Massimo didn't care about any of that.

He had a cover to maintain.
