The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 306

"I want you to practice using this system," Massimo said. "You're doing this for the next two hours straight—you need to string together a natural conversation within seconds. Otherwise, this won't work."

Luca released a silent sigh. His eyes did not hide his displease. "If that's what you want, Don Massimo," he replied.

Massimo had tested Luca daily on his ability to run the program and select appropriate clips. Though Luca tended toward the more gruff responses—pushing back answers and directing callers to talk to "Massimo" later—his second-in-command quickly became competent in the task.

And even if Luca had loudly stated Massimo was being paranoid, Massimo couldn't be more satisfied that everything had gone exactly to plan.

Even if Elena grew suspicious of her husband's or her boss' behavior in the future, she'd never consider that they were the same person. Massimo's double life was safe.

Though the dinner grew more lively, Elena couldn't help but feel that there was a tension still in the air. She knew she could trust that her husband wasn't hiding anything, but Elena wondered if the whole reason that ridiculous idea about Max leading a double life only sounded so convincing was because Elena herself wasn't being honest.

"Max," Elena said slowly, "I need to come clean. I... haven't been fully truthful to you."

"What do you mean?" Max asked. He sounded so confused—and that just made Elena feel worse.

"Well, I never told you my full name," Elena said. "It's Elena Vitale."

"Okay?" Max replied. And didn't that just confirm he was an innocent civilian? Anyone in the mafia would know that name by now—and more importantly, what it meant.

"Of the Vitale family—a small mafia family," Elena explained. "And I am a doctor, but I'm a doctor to a different mafia family—the Mafia King's own family. So when I said my boss wanted to pretend that we were married, it was him, the Don of All Dons, Massimo Ferraro."

Briefly, Massimo wondered if it was such a good idea for him to have been taking Elena outside the estate in her blind state. If someone spotted them and happened to attack—

"Besides," Massimo hurriedly continued, cutting off that train of thought, "you are still a doctor, like you said. It's not like you were lying about that. And I wasn't ever asking for details, so that's not on you."

"Still," Elena replied, "I wanted to tell you the full truth."

"Why?" Massimo asked. "I promise you, this all really doesn't matter. So why tell me this tonight?"

Elena gave a shy smile. "Isn't it obvious? I'm planning on leaving, and my husband deserves to know why."
