The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 309

"We need to plan a meeting with Sloane and Noah," Elena said seriously. "I know we're both busy, but I've decided on my answer to their offer and we shouldn't keep them waiting."

Massimo, surprisingly, just nodded. "We should have time the morning before our departure. I know that's later in the week than you'd want—"

"It's fine," Elena interrupted. "Sorry for bothering you so late. Have a good night, Massimo."

"You too," he replied. As he closed the door to his office, the mafia don looked more tired than ever before.

Massimo made the arrangements the following day. He's sure Noah—or Sloane, at the very least—wasn't happy that he was delaying the decision down to the last minute, but it really couldn't be helped.

Massimo wasn't being petty or anything. He had already used up what limited free time he had on Elena—the date, the preparation for it, and her shooting practice. Massimo was practically buried in responsibilities.

And he was almost glad for the non-stop, rapid pace of work and responsibilities. Otherwise, Massimo would have to focus on the growing anxiety that settled in his chest.

Which was stupid. He knew what Elena's answer was—she had, unknowingly, confessed her full plan to Massimo. So he knew that this should feel like a victory.

He should feel pleased. This was a triumph over what seemed like an impossible enemy. Yet the victory only felt hollow.

Elena still wanted to leave. She would leave. The only change was that her departure date was a few months away rather than hours.

And so, the nervous feeling stayed settled in Massimo's heart.

The week really flew by in an instant. Before Elena knew it, it was the day of her and Massimo's departure and Sloane and Noah were already at the estate. Elena ushered Massimo, Sloane, and Noah into the living room.

And then, remembering her mother's previous discomfort during her earlier visits, Elena dismissed all the servants. The way Sloane instantly relaxed brought a smile to Elena's face.

"So you'll be leaving New York City soon then?" Massimo asked, voice as neutral as could be.

"This afternoon," Sloane confirmed. "I don't see a point in staying longer now that this deal is over with."

Sloane and Noah rose from their seats. The two men shook hands. Sloane went to hug Elena.

Elena walked the contact—but she was surprised by how tightly Sloane's arms wrapped around her and how close she pulled Elena to her chest. Elena relished the confirmation that her mother loved her as much as Elena loved her.

"You can visit any time," Sloane whispered, voice tight with overflowing emotion. "You have my number, so don't be a stranger. You can call or visit whenever you like—my home is always open to my darling daughter."

Elena buried her head in Sloane's embrace. "Thank you," she said softly. "I love you so much."
