The second they're out of the woods, Elena insists on retiring to her bedroom. She doesn't think she can handle pretending to be the Mafia Queen for another few hours on top of all the excitement they've dealt with.
Elena is grateful that Massimo insisted on redesigning the entire building. He had noted that many families would need accommodations, and the size of the mafia had only grown since the Ferraros last held their winter parties. It also gave them a great opportunity to redo the Ferraro's own master bedroom.
Though Massimo and Elena entered through one door, the bedroom was actually a suite with one common area and two separate bedrooms. This meant Elena could, for the first time today, finally have some privacy without risking the Mafia King's reputation.
Massimo had muttered something about looking into what happened before he disappeared to his own room. While Elena knew they'd have to solve this mystery sooner rather than later, she was too exhausted to help. The second she was alone, she flopped onto her bed.
The little wolf cub stayed cuddled in her arms. It suddenly hit her that she had volunteered to take care of such a tiny thing. While Elena was well studied in human medicine, that didn't mean she was an expert veterinarian—not many of her skills would transfer over for taking care of a young wolf!
But Elena knew she had to try. She couldn't let this poor creature suffer and die alone. She had to help it!
Elena owed the cub that much. After all, if Elena hadn't meddled, the cub's mother would still be alive.
Elena's breath caught in her throat. That was the issue, wasn't it? That Elena had fired her gun and killed a living creature.
Sure, she was being attacked. Sure, she had been panicking. But Elena hadn't even hesitated—she just closed her eyes and pulled the trigger.
It was all too easy. Pulling the trigger and ending a life was too simple. Elena had practiced the motions again and again—until she hardly thought about it when her own life was in peril.
It made Elena feel rotten. Was this how the mafia convinced their members to take lives? Start with paper targets and then move onto animals and then people?
Elena was suddenly struck by a nightmarish vision. She saw herself in the aftermath of a warehouse shoot-out only this time, instead of holding her medical tools, she was holding a gun. She was at the center of all the death and destruction and pointless spilling of blood—because she had caused it.
Massimo frowned. The Morellos were in twenty-fifth—not even the top ten. Their placement only cemented the idea that the Morellos were up to no good.
Other families probably dismissed the Morello's scoring. After all, there were thousands of families competing. Plus, many of the Morello's advisers and underlings had refused to attend the party—out of solidarity for their don not being allowed within New York, reportedly.
Massimo wondered if Tyler just had a plan that needed more of his subordinates' help.
But regardless, Leo and his own subordinates had accepted their invitations. And while Leo preferred to play his little mind games, he was known to employ several top shooters. Many of his men had shown off their marksmanship at parties before.
Which meant Leo could and should be performing better at this hunting party. At the very least, Massimo expected the Morello family to be within the top five at the end of the first day.
