The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 321

"What about the staffers?" Massimo asked, changing the subject. "Did they report any problems from the animals getting loose into the wrong zones?"

"No," Luca replied. "There were a few close calls, but nothing that happened in view of our guests. The worst injuries resulted from a few capos trying to compete while hungover and needing to be escorted back to their rooms—and that was just a few scrapes and some bruised egos and pride."

Massimo frowned. With no major injuries happening on the first day of the competition, that meant he had zero grounds to cancel or shorten the hunting competition. If he did, he'd only appear weak and paranoid in front of thousands of mafia families.

Even though Massimo was certain the Morellos were up to no good, he couldn't take any action against them. At least, not directly...

Perhaps it was time for the Mafia King to test out some of his new allies' loyalties and connections.

"Luca, I need you to deliver a message to the men of the Conti family," Massimo stated. "Listen closely, and tell them this..."

The next day, Elena decided to go to the viewing tower. Since Massimo was still competing, Elena figured it would only be appropriate for her to publicly cheer him on. Besides, she might have the opportunity to strengthen the Ferraro family's ties to other families by chatting with the other ladies who would be watching their husbands, sons, and brothers compete.

Elena took her wolf cub with her. She didn't want to leave the little thing alone, but, judging by how cold it was when she found it, Elena also didn't want it to get sick. Luckily, there was an extra set of bed sheets that Elena could use—plus, they had an elegant pattern on them, so the spare blanket she wrapped the cub in was both practical and fashionable.

When Elena got to the viewing tower, she immediately recognized two familiar face. Lucilla and Jill were already sitting next to each other—they must've arrived early to claim good seats.

"Good morning, ladies," Elena greeted them.

"Good morning—what's that in your arms?" Lucilla immediately asked. It was amazing how quickly her voice switched from sweet and calm to horrified.

"A wolf cub," Elena explained. Then, because she realized how concerning that sounded on its own, she quickly added, "It's very young, so it can't harm you."

"That's... lovely, dear," Jill said. The proper woman flashed Elena a smile—though Elena could tell Jill leaned slightly away from her now.

In fact, Elena could already feel people staring at her. Those within her gaze quickly turned away, wanting nothing to do with her.

At that moment, Elena saw the Conti family arrive—minus Elio and Rocco, since they were competing, of course. Elena waved to get their attention.

Then, for some reason, only Don Nico and Beatrice started heading over. Luna and Riley stayed where they are.

"Luna!" Elena called out, thinking the woman had just missed her waving.

But before Elena could call out to Riley, Luna suddenly rolled her eyes. She grabbed Riley's arm and the two women walked in the opposite direction.

They struck up a conversation with a nearby couple, clearly pretending they hadn't seen or heard Elena at all.

Elena's heart sank. Why were they ignoring her?
