"I'll consider it," Elena said. Honestly, she was more than a little surprised that Massimo was taking an interest in her social circles—maybe he just wanted her to strengthen ties with the Abano family.
"Speaking of parties," Elena said, "have you heard back from any of the mafia families about our winter hunting party?"
"There were the usual thank you cards," Massimo stated. "I trust the word of my men and allies to report more accurate feelings though."
"Fair," Elena replied. "But their reports have all been positive, right?"
Massimo nodded. "Apparently, the DeSanties are bragging about it to everyone."
"That's great," Elena said with a smile. "They're usually so picky about everything."
Massimo finished up his meal and handed his dishes to a nearby servant. "What about the women?" he asked. "What are they saying?"
"They really appreciated our spectator tower," Elena reported. "While some of the younger kids wanted the lower levels to compete for a bit longer, no one's faulting us for that. Honestly, I'm surprised none of the older women had anything to complain about."
Massimo nodded. The corners of his mouth slightly turned upwards. Though he would never say it, Elena could tell he was pleased by how well-received their party was.
"I think we did amazingly," Elena said. "It sounds like this wasn't only the biggest party the mafia has held in ages but also the best!"
"As befitting anything with the Ferraro name," Massimo replied coolly. His face suddenly sharpened. "But we can't afford to relax."
Elena frowned. "Why? Has something happened?"
"While we were gone, some of my men discovered a... potential concern," Massimo explained slowly. "I'm currently verifying their reports, but it looks as if several agents of the FBI have arrived at local police stations in the nearby cities."
Elena swallowed harshly. She set aside her cup of tea, no longer thirsty or in a good mood.
