Elena looked at Massimo. "We have to—"
But he was already far ahead of her. He had taken off his suit jacket and wrapped it around his fist. In one swift motion, he broke through the glass window of a nearby door.
The moment Massimo unlocked the door and opened it, Elena bolted in the direction of the scream. She traced it down the hallway and to an unlocked door.
The room probably was supposed to be used for meeting presentations, but the chairs and tables had long ago been striped away. Instead, they had been replaced with bunk beds.
It took Elena one second to find the woman who had screamed. She was on the ground and looming over her was a man in all black. A dozen other women had moved to the walls to get away from him, but two other men in black stayed nearby.
There weren't any children anywhere.
"You don't do anything unless I tell you to!" the man screamed at the frightened woman. "You don't open a window—or even breathe—without my permission, whore!"
Even from this distance, Elena could tell the woman's ankle was at least sprained. Judging by the odd way they held themselves, she and the other women likely had bruises hidden under their clothes. When the man pulled the woman up by her hair, there was thin trickle of blood coming from her nose.
The two other mafia guards took notice of Massimo and Elena. One of them approached, a hand resting on a baton.
"Who are you?" he asked. "What are you doing here?"
Elena only felt frustrated. It looked like these men were only trafficking adult women—which meant Massimo couldn't do anything. To make matters worse, they had gotten caught.
"I'm the Mafia King," Massimo said coldly.
The mafia man's eyes widened as he got a good look at Massimo. For a moment, it seemed like Massimo wouldn't say anything else, but then he glanced at Elena.
"My wife and I are here for a spot inspection," Massimo continued. "I'm aware the Sala and D'Amico families have been trafficking women for a few decades now, so you should know the routine."
"Then you should go and find Capo Sala," Massimo stated. "I doubt he'd be happy if this whole operation were to get shut down just because a few subordinates don't understand proper procedure."
The mafia men left the room without a single word.
Massimo turned to Elena. "We don't have much time," he whispered. "Let's look for something serious to nail these Massachusetts dons with now that we don't have any witnesses."
He could tell Elena wanted nothing more than to investigate the injuries of the women, but they really didn't have time for that. Massimo knew the boss of this operation—Capo Sala—would be somewhere in this building. That only gave them maybe ten or fifteen minutes to find what they were looking for.
Elena slowly nodded. "Where do we look?" she asked.
"Here," Massimo replied. "The layout didn't show any other rooms of this size on the first floor, and the Sala and D'Amico families are still shipping normal goods so those probably are stored in the smaller rooms. Plus, they like to keep the women and children together—check the bunks."
