Chapter 34
Massimo couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Why hadn’t Elena told him she was there when Tyler had. orchestrated bloody chaos by causing a terrible traffic accident? That had happened nine days ago!
Of course Massimo already had his men looking into it. He‘ be an utter disgrace of a Mafia King if hadn’t. And he’d be equally pathetic if he couldn’t take one look at the carnage and know it was Tyler’s doing.
Tyler might has well have signed the scene in red ink. Only he would be foolish enough to cause problems right outside Don Massimo Ferraro’s doorstep.
But why hadn’t Massimo connected the dots and found out Elena was there? Sure, there were reports of a woman assisting injured civilians before emergency services could arrive, but Massimo had chalked it up to a random saint helping out.
He should have known that woman was Elena. No, Massimo did have his suspicions–he just didn’t want to look into the situation and have it confirmed.
Elena had stayed frozen for a long moment, but then her own face hardened. She met the don’s eyes with no hesitation.
“It happened off hours,” she said calmly. “I didn’t think it was any concern of yours whether I help out in emergencies or not.”
“That’s not the issue,” Massimo hissed.
“Then what is the issue, Don Massimo?” she asked.
If Massimo was a cat, his fur would be standing on edge. Despite the glare he gave her, Elena couldn’t shake the feeling that he was more concerned than angry–no, he was scared?
It didn’t fit with the image Elena had of her boss, but her gut told her that it was true all the same.
“Whether you live or die is of concern to me,” Massimo spat out harshly. “Do you think it reflects well on me if some upstart takes out my people, or if I don’t punish them for trying to kill those under my protection? Did you even think about that, or do you simply exist to cause me avoidable headaches?”
It was the cruelest Massimo had ever spoken to Elena, but she could understand his rage. So that’s what he was afraid of: getting dethroned.
“I didn’t have any proof there was mafia involvement,” Elena explained. “Or that I was being targeted—”
“I have people for that,” Massimo stated. “Next time your life is in danger, have the common sense to tell me, Elena.”
Elena nodded her head. This wasn’t worth picking a fight over.
Massimo barely glanced at her as he dismissed her. Elena couldn’t help wondering where she had messed up. First trouble in her marriage, now trouble at her job–she had a reat track record of ruining things.
Massimo fumed but tried to reign in his anger. “Luca, make the rounds in the appropriate families. I want to know everything about the Lennox Ave ‘accident‘ yesterday–this takes highest priority.”
“Yes, sir.”
Massimo didn’t wait for Luca to leave–the don headed to s office immediately. He needed to start going through the evidence Luca and his people had already gathered.
Massimo had originally planned on waiting for Tyler to slip up further before retaliating, but that plan was now
out the window.

Tyler had tried to kill Elena–all because the bastard could’t have her himself. Massimo was going to make Tyler pay for that. Massimo was going to watch the upstart burn or that one sin.
