Massimo hummed in response. His date with Elena was tonight, and getting this bad news certainly felt like a bad sign. He felt incredibly unlucky.
Then again, Joshua was a competent lawyer. If he said the process would need to take a few days, it would be better for Massimo to focus on Elena and then start dealing with the FBI. It wouldn't help at all for the Mafia King to cause trouble for the police before they started causing trouble for him.
Joshua frowned suddenly. "You need to take this seriously, Massimo," Joshua warned. "The men in the FBI aren't your usual cops."
"I imagine their egos are bigger?" Massimo replied tiredly.
"They don't play by the rules," Joshua corrected. "If they don't find something to nail you with, I wouldn't be surprised if they try to plant incriminating evidence or charge you with crimes you never committed."
"Noted," Massimo said, "but your new friends weren't the only thing I wanted to talk to you about."
"You've got five minutes before my break ends."
"Good, I need your help with a different problem..."
Massimo returned to the estate less than an hour later. There was a lot of work for Massimo, Elena, and all the Ferraro's subordinates to do. After all, they had to take over the human trafficking ring they had visited the other day.
Elena was happy to be busy. She loved when she was actually able to help people. Even though she was only helping Luca find where the women were taken from as well as where their closest relatives were, Elena found the work to be just as rewarding as giving medical attention.
She couldn't help but notice that Massimo's mood only seemed to worsen.
"What's wrong?" Elena finally asked him.
"None of my men found any evidence the Salas or D'Amicos were involved in child trafficking," Massimo replied.
"Do you think the anonymous tips were fake then?" Elena wondered. "Maybe the Sala and D'Amico families were trying to set you up?"
