When Elena and Massimo arrived back at the estate, Elena was delighted to learn nothing had gone wrong. She was, however, a bit confused when Luca told her a package had arrived for her.
"I didn't order anything," Elena said.
Luca only smiled. "It's from the Conti women—I believe they sent you a gift."
Massimo frowned. "Is it appropriate?"
"It's already been cleared by security, sir."
Massimo sighed but didn't offer any further protest. Elena took that as permission to open the rather large box sitting on the dining room table.
Inside were a a plethora of dog toys, treats, and accessories—everything from little outfits to chewing sticks and custom-made balls were packed into the box. At the top of the pile was a note.
"Sorry again for having to trick you during the competition," Elena said, reading the note aloud. "We thought your wolf cub Ruby would appreciate at least one of the gifts we bought her. Love Luna and Riley."
Massimo peered briefly into the box. "If your beast doesn't like anything in there, I shudder to think how she would've survived in the woods."
"But isn't this all stuff for dogs?" Elena observed. "A wolf cub must need different things. ThoughI guess she has been doing alright with what I've found for her so far… but I can't help but worry that I'll end up missing something..."
"Why don't you think about all that in the morning?" Massimo suggested. "It's too late to be calling wolf experts at this hour."
Elena relented and went upstairs. Ruby was already sleeping at the foot of her bed. Despite her initial worries, Ruby had proven to be not much different than a particularly energetic puppy.
When Elena woke up the next morning and went to grab breakfast for herself and Ruby, she found a note next to her package from the Conti women. It contained detailed instructions on a suggested diet for Ruby as well as suggested exercises and sleeping schedules. At the bottom of the page was a list of experts and their numbers.
"Sure," Joshua said, squinting at the offered food. "And it's also a coincidence you know my order down to the condiments."
"Take it as a sign to mix up your routine," Massimo replied. "How's work?"
Joshua glanced down the street. Since Massimo wasn't a fool, he had already confirmed that their seating spot was far away from any sellers or their customers—making it all but impossible for anyone to eavesdrop. But it was nice to see that Joshua was still on guard.
"Busy," Joshua replied after a moment. "The FBI have already sent their agents to a bunch of nearby offices—mine included. They're in the process of formally starting their own investigation."
"How long will that take?"
"It depends. There's still the issue of getting warrants to search your properties and use any evidence they find there, as well as some other paperwork I won't bore you with. But judges generally move a little faster when it's the big guys like federal agents making the requests—I give you maybe a week, at best, but a few days would be the fastest, I think?"
