Max awkwardly stood and returned to Elena's side. She gave him a brief huge—much to the gathering crowd's joy. They shouted compliments and well wishes at the couple.
Elena noticed the clock on the wall—it was almost time for the party at The Rose of the City to start!
"Max, we've got to go," Elena hurriedly told him. "If we don't head out now, we'll be late to the masquerade!"
Max checked his watch and frowned. "Let's head out then."
The two smiled at the onlookers and returned their kind words with thanks. Though Elena was feeling a bit awkward because of all the unexpected attention, she wasn't going to let it ruin her night. She was determined to have a lovely evening!
Massimo drove Elena and himself to the greenhouse. Luckily, it wasn't too far away. But Elena did have reason to be worried about the time—New York City traffic could get awful at this hour.
They were stuck in stop-and-go traffic. For every street he drove down, they spent at least fifteen minutes idling in place. Massimo didn't need to totally focus on driving, which meant his mind drifted to other places.
He had wanted to ask Elena if she still wanted to be married to him. Massimo thought the gesture of proposing—this time with a wedding ring rather than the engagement ring Fabio had delivered in his place—would be romantic. Turns out, it just made the whole act too confusing.
Though Massimo was certain he could've clarified the situation if they hadn't attracted a crowd. Those well-meaning, excited strangers had cut him off before he hardly got a sentence out! Combine that with the vague words he did manage to get out, and he's not surprised Elena got confused.
The weight of his parent's wedding rings felt heavy in his pocket. It felt like the type of gesture Elena would love—and even Massimo himself thought this idea was nice. But maybe one of the rings looked too much like an engagement ring to Elena and the onlookers?
As Massimo slowly inched his car closer and closer to their destination, he felt his resolve growing. He wouldn't let this small failure stop him! Honestly, it was more of a setback than anything else—nothing truly terrible at all.
He could pivot from this. Massimo just had to be smarter. The night was young and he had plenty of time—he could still do this!
