Elena stared in horror at Max—some man had just rushed over and tackled her husband to the floor!
"Hey, get off of him!" Elena yelled.
Elena glanced over to the nearby staircase. Maybe she could get some help or find security? But instead of seeing an employee or confused party goers, she saw more men in cheap suits and masks starting to make their way to the top floor.
Elena turned back to the ongoing fight. It was only as the two men struggled that she noticed something was stuck in Max's side.
"Did you stab him with a knife?" Elena questioned aloud.
Of course, the attacker didn't respond, but she stomped over. Elena planted her hands firmly on the man's shoulders and tried to pull him off Max.
Luckily, Max chose that moment to try pushing his attacker away. By their combined force, they were able to separate Max from his attacker!
Which also meant Elena was now holding the dangerous man... Elena wished she had thought this through more. It only took a moment for the man to break out of her hold.
But with the man turning around to face Elena, he didn't see Max's punch coming. The attacker fell to the floor instantly—knocked unconscious within seconds.
"Are you okay?" Elena asked hurriedly. She could now clearly see a knife handle in Max's side. "Don't remove that—not until we get you medical help!"
Max nodded. He knelt down by the attacker and removed the unconscious man's mask.
"Does this guy look familiar to you?" Max asked.
Elena swore once she saw the man's face.
"That's one of Tyler's subordinates—he sometimes would come to meetings with my father," Elena explained. Then she remembered Max had no clue about mafia matters. "I mean, he's part of a rival mafia group and doesn't like me."
Just then, Elena heard footsteps racing up the stairs. Right, the other men!
"There's more men coming up," Elena warned.
"Luckily," Max remarked idly. "Anyways, I figured we have a better chance of losing our attackers by hiding out here and maybe leaving from an employee exit rather than heading straight to the street."
Elena nodded. "That makes sense," she remarked.
Then she thought about it for a moment longer. It made too much sense. It was way too logical for a normal civilian to suggest—a mafia man used to avoiding others would suggest it, but Max?
She was honestly surprised by how rational Max was acting.
"How are you not freaked out?" Elena asked suddenly.
Max shrugged. Then his eyes widened—almost like how he hadn't considered how dangerous and crazy a situation they were both in.
"Well, I," Max stumbled for a moment, "it's just... fight or flight reflex, I guess? A-anyways, those guys seemed like they only had brass knuckles and knives on them, not guns. So that would mean they're trying to keep things quiet and not draw public attention—right?"
