Elena nodded. "Max," she said delicately, "have you been in situations like this before?"
Max opened his mouth to respond but there was suddenly a thud coming from back in the main room—back where the dance was supposed to be taking place. They both perked up their ears.
While Elena couldn't make out any words above the fire alarms' ringing, she could tell that several people were talking. And they were coming closer.
"We need to go now," Max whispered.
He led Elena to the back of the room. But when he tried the door, it wouldn't budge. "It's locked," Max cursed.
"We don't have time to find the key," Elena said in a hurry. "We need a different plan."
Elena glanced around the room. There was a large metal locker right next to the door—with any luck, their attackers might not even notice it with all the other tools and bags of dirt taking up most of the space.
"There," Elena hissed as she pointed at the locker. "Let's go—now!"
There were already some tools in the locker. Elena and Max had to squish tightly together to fit inside and close the locker's door—they could only get it mostly shut, leaving a small crack to look through. Hopefully, it looked normal and closed from the other side of the room.
They hid themselves not a moment too soon. Five men in familiar suits and cheap masks flooded into the room.
"Where the fuck could they be?" one shouted above the alarms.
"Not here—I'm gonna see about turning off that damn fire alarm. It's driving me crazy."
"Fine, but the rest of us are going to keep looking, so you won't get any credit when we find them!"
"The boss is offering a big reward for that woman..."
Elena held her breath. Her hands felt sweaty. She nearly dropped her black purse.
Massimo didn't let himself or Elena move for another five minutes. Then he guided Elena back to his car. He'd never been more pleased he took one of his more average-looking cars.
While things had gone poorly, Massimo was glad he had texted Luca an SOS message the moment they had entered the fire escape stairwell. As per standard procedure, Luca sent both nearby mafia allies to his location and made an anonymous, untraceable call to the police about a fight breaking out in the area. Best of all, it took all of five seconds to organize on Massimo's part—which meant it was easy to hide from Elena.
He discretely checked his phone while Elena buckled up. Luca had stated he followed procedure and asked if additional assistance was needed.
*"Not yet," Massimo texted. "But stay on stand-by."
As Massimo started to put his phone away, he cleared his throat. "We should probably head somewhere safe," he said.
Massimo wondered if he could get away with suggesting they hideout at the estate. Would a civilian suggest that? Before Massimo could make up his mind, he heard a rapid series of gunshots.
His car was being shot at!
