Elena was surprised by her husband's reaction, but that didn't mean she didn't still feel guilty. She shook her head sadly.
"But you planned such a romantic date," Elena lamented, "and I ruined it."
"You didn't do anything," Max defended.
"Those guys were clearly after me," Elena explained. "They're from the Morello family, which are total enemies against the Ferraro family, the family I work for. There's no reason for them to harm an innocent mechanic—unless they saw you with me, Don Massimo Ferraro's wife."
Max took a few swift steps until he was standing at Elena's side. His expression was suddenly serious.
"We don't know if that's true," he pointed out. "Maybe they were trying to kidnap you and leave no witnesses. Or maybe they wanted to capture or kill both of us to make some statement about how weak the Ferraros are—"
"I hardly see how involving a normal civilian would be part of a mafia don's master plan," Elena argued.
Max hesitated, clearly thinking. Elena didn't blame him—understanding the intricacies and details of the mafia world took her years, and he had only had a few short weeks!
"Maybe they're bad at making plans," Max replied weakly. "Regardless, we have no idea what their goal was. And we don't have that information because we are both equally just victims in this case, so you don't have to apologize for anything, Elena."
Max rested his hands gently on Elena's shoulders as he spoke. Between his words and his touch, Elena felt his unwavering comfort and support.
"I just feel bad because we were having such a wonderful night," Elena confessed. "I feel closer to you than I've ever felt with anyone before. When I'm with you, I want time to stop, just so that we can be together for longer."
