Elena watched carefully as Tyler's men inspected Max's car. It was clear from their smug faces that they recognized it as Elena and Max's getaway vehicle. Elena couldn't make out what the men were saying, but they were clearly talking among themselves.
One gestured at the building—that wasn't good. Especially because the other men started nodding.
As they gestured and talked, Elena noticed that these mafia men were better armed. While she saw flashes of knives and gleaming metal on some knuckles, she spotted bats and batons at their sides, too. There were also a few suspicious lumps that Elena feared may be hidden guns—though she couldn't be sure they weren't just other hidden tools.
Either way, the mafia men were much more armed than they had been at The Rose of the City. It was obvious Tyler's men weren't taking chances with their mission anymore.
As a few men entered the apartment building, Elena stepped back from the window. Instantly, Max drew the blind shut—blocking their view of their pursuers, but also their pursers' view of them.
Elena took a deep breath and tried to think about what to do.
Massimo did his best to hold his tongue, but it was difficult. He could tell Elena wasn't prepared for any of this. After all, she had thought they were in the clear and were done dealing with mafia men for the night.
Elena might've been raised in the mafia, but the Vitale family hadn't seen any real violence in decades. Massimo, meanwhile, had learned how to handle scuffles like this when he was still a child. Elena might be faring better than the average person, but that didn't mean she had this situation handled.
"We should leave," Elena said suddenly. "it'll take them some time to get up to this floor, so all we need to do is wait a few minutes for them to start searching the lower floor and sneak out through the fire escape again."
Massimo shook his head. "There's no way they won't leave some men outside to act as guards," he pointed out. "Plus, you know this building, so you have some advantage here, right?"
Granted, Massimo definitely knew the building better than Elena, but surely she could still recognize that having a fight here would be better than fighting outside.
