Massimo didn't start his impromptu security measures until all five men were inside the apartment. He knew that sometimes, even in the most desperate of situations, patience was how a war is won. But the second they had all stepped past the broken door and knocked over cabinet, Massimo started pressing buttons on his phone.
First was the speaker Elena and himself had placed by the door. He had the volume turned up all the way, so the second he turned the device one, loud music began playing.
While they were distracted by that, Massimo moved from behind the couch to keeping himself pressed flat against the wall. This was the risky part of his plan, but he compensated by turning on a few lamps in the opposite direction. That way, Tyler's goons unthinkingly would look the wrong way as the light drew their eyes.
Massimo debated using his kitchen knife, but he instead decided to pick up a nearby unlit lamp and wield that instead. After all, Elena probably didn't want any bloodshed even now.
Massimo got a clean hit on the nearest man, knocking him unconscious. Granted, Massimo probably at least caused a concussion, but there was not a lot of obvious blood so he counted that as good enough.
One down, four to go.
Unfortunately, his movement alerted the other four mafia men. Massimo ran further into the apartment, back to the kitchen. He just needed to get out of their line of sight.
Predictably, the attackers followed.
Elena moved from behind the couch to its side. The other mafia men were distracted by Max, which meant they had completely forgotten about Elena. Still, she was nervous as she watched them go to follow her husband.
At the last second, she pushed the couch in the way of the last man. The furniture hit against his leg hard. It wasn't enough to bring him down, but it bought Elena enough time to get into the kitchen herself unhindered.
Inside the kitchen, Max was doing a decent job of fighting off the three men. He was using his knife to block a fair number of baton hits—the baseball bat, however, proved to be too strong and knocked the blade from his hand.
Elena raised her gun. "Freeze," she yelled. "Or I shoot!"
The men turned to look at her.
Max, meanwhile, picked up a nearby frying pan and hit the man nearest to him. He quickly disarmed the goon and, within just three hits, he had the man writhing on the ground.
Unfortunately, Elena heard the man she had hit with the sofa starting to move. She lowered her gun and ran to Max's side. At the same time, Max advanced in her direction, pushing back his remaining two attackers.
With the arrival of the last man, Elena and Max were still out-numbered.
Massimo was surprised how well they were doing. Honestly, he had expected more from Tyler's men. Why were they still using such weak weapons?
He shoved his phone into Elena's hands. Wordlessly, she turned on the lights and, after a slight delay, started playing music from another speaker they had placed here.
Massimo used the distraction to retrieve his knife. Elena made the lights flick on and off—a good disorienting tactic, but Massimo was trained to ignore such things.
One of the men still made a move to grab Elena. Massimo stabbed him in the hand for that. He followed that up with a quick punch to the stomach and then jaw.
Predictably, the man was no longer a threat. Only two left then.
Without any weapon, Massimo had to fight with just his fists. He couldn't make much headway against two armed opponents. Massimo waited patiently for an opening, refusing to back up further and leave Elena unguarded.
When one of the men stepped back, Massimo struck. He switched tactics and tackled the remaining man to the ground. From that close, the baseball bat wasn't a usual weapon.
For the mafia man, at least. Massimo used it to choke out its owner.
As Massimo got up, he felt a sharp pain in his shoulder. He reached up and felt a knife.
The last mafia man apparently had grabbed the kitchen blade from his coworker's hand. Massimo was a little surprised by the man's casual cruelty, but he didn't have time to dwell on it. The man was quickly trying to strangle Massimo by his costume's tie and collar.
Elena dropped Max's phone. It wasn't useful anymore. Instead, she gripped her gun tightly.
"Don't you dare," Elena threatened.
The goon was unphased by her words. He walked up to Max, completely unbothered. Then, in one fluid movement, he pistol-whipped Max.
The pan, Max's only weapon, clattered uselessly to the ground as the mafia man repeatedly hit Max, over and over.
"Leave him out of this," Elena yelled.
The goon scoffed. He dragged Max by his collar, keeping his gun hand professionally steady. Elena could tell this was a mafia man who enjoyed violence and hurt people regularly.
"No, I don't think I will," the goon replied. He kicked Max in the stomach, forcing him into a pained kneeling position. "I think I'm going to kill your man, then kill you, and then take that useless toy off your hands."
The goon's eyes shifted from Elena back to Max. She could easily read his killing intent in the way he steadied his breath. He meant what he said—he was going to kill her husband.
Left with no choice, Elena took aim herself. She fired her gun.
Two nearly simultaneous shots rang out.
The goon went to clutch his chest. Red blood was already blossoming from his shirt and the bullet wound underneath it. His fingers barely touched the wound before he gave a halted cry and fell over.
Dead. Dead because of Elena.
But Elena barely focused on that. She was running over to Max.
Her husband was clutching his face. There was a large crack in his mask—and a thin trail of blood underneath it.
