The mask, once a perfect and beautiful piece of art, hit the ground and shattered. But Elena could barely pay attention to the destruction—she was dealing with a much more important shattering of a different kind. After all, the face of her husband, someone she thought she was finally starting to know and love, was one she recognized.
Massimo's green eyes stared back at her. His familiar sharp jawline was resting in a neutral expression, as if it was frozen in place. And really, that didn't strike Elena as odd—she herself felt like time had stopped.
She tried to look for some unfamiliar part of the man in front of her, but she kept coming up short. His long black hair was usually tied back but she could still recognize its silky smooth luster. She knew if his hands weren't gloved, she'd find familiar callouses and scars there.
Wasn't it the shape and feel of his hands that first gave him away? That made Elena suspicious that her husband might not be just a humble mechanic?
But no, that couldn't be! Elena had ruled out this possibility already! That one dinner where she talked to Massimo on the phone in front of her husband proved they were different people.
There had to be another explanation. There just had to be.
Elena swallowed hard. "So," she stated shakily, "are you twins with Massimo?"
She hated how pathetic her voice sounded. It was crazy how much desperation could fit into such a short sentence.
The man in front of her doesn't answer. He doesn't look at her at all. And that's when Elena knows that despite how much she doesn't want to believe it, her husband and her boss are the same person—the Don of All Dons, Massimo Ferraro.
Massimo can't think of what to say. There's no point in lying. There's not a way to explain any of this.
He can't help but feel annoyed—he was supposed to tell Elena the truth tonight! He had planned it all out perfectly. If Tyler's goons hadn't messed everything up—
But then Massimo's rage left him. What does it matter? The choice was taken out of his hands, but who's to say this wasn't the way things were always going to end?
