And to make matters worse, now Elena was starting to feel jealous. Because she thought she had a relationship as loving as theirs until just a few hours ago. Then Massimo had to go and shatter that illusion along with his mask.
"Emi," Elena asked suddenly, "how do you have such a great relationship with your husband?"
Emi smiled shyly. "I mean, I think every couple fights," Emi said, "but we just try to hear each other out and work like a team."
Elena wanted to frown at the platitude but kept her expression neutral. "But are you really okay with Gavino being part of the mafia?" Elena asked. "I know he isn't directly involved in fights anymore, but he's still—"
"Would you like some tea?" Emi interrupted, suddenly standing. "I think I'll make a fresh pot. I could get out some cookies if you still don't want the soup, too."
Elena looked down at the soup bowl. "I'm fine," she said coldly.
Emi walked away.
Elena didn't know what she expected. A mafia member would never admit to the Mafia Queen that she wasn't fully loyal to the mafia—that'd be a death sentence. Like always, Elena's mafia connections made it impossible for her to connect to others.
Though as Elena watched Emi work in the kitchen, she couldn't help but notice that Emi kept glancing out the windows. The woman couldn't block out the sounds nor did she hide the way she bit her lip with worry at every gunshot. That wasn't exactly the reaction of a woman thrilled by the violent life her husband led.
It took about twenty minutes for the fighting to die down. Then, the door opened and Massimo and Gavino's direct subordinates entered.
Elena might be mad, but she was still a doctor. She had Emi fetch extra supplies and started treating the injured mafia men.
Elena did her best to lose herself in her work. She was extremely grateful for an excuse to keep her hands busy and stay entirely out of Massimo's way.
She still noticed when Massimo's phone rang. She was surprised he put it on speaker phone.
Then again, he was apparently starting to stripe off his top layers. It seemed he was finally going to properly treat the wounds he got during the date—along with a few new ones.
Elena immediately averted her gaze. She was trying to ignore her boss right now!
Her confusion must've shown on her face because he immediately said, "We shouldn't leave you alone right now. Just in case."
Elena hurriedly looked away. She didn't know how to respond to Massimo's words, so she didn't.
Elena easily finished treating the rest of the men. One by one, they all headed into the front office to give Gavino their reports and hear his orders. Emi must've headed there, too, at some point because it was just her and Massimo now.
Massimo, who was bandaging his wounds in the most inefficient way possible.
Elena wordlessly walked over to him and took the bandages out of his hands. She then took a clean washcloth and ran it over his wounds.
"What are you doing?" Massimo whispered.
"What does it look like?" Elena replied. "I'm treating your injuries."
