Massimo didn't know what to say. He had no idea why Elena was being so aggressive about this point. Did she really think he was going to ask her to go outside and face their attackers?
He wanted her as far away from them as possible!
Massimo didn't say anything. He simply took very large, pointed steps away from Elena. He headed outside.
As Massimo thought about it, he realized what the real problem was—Elena had committed her first real kill. With all the chaos, Massimo had almost forgotten that.
No wonder Elena was frazzled. She had barely been trained on how to use a gun properly—and she clearly wasn't mentally ready to take a life. But her survival instincts had kicked in, and now Elena had to come to terms with what she'd done.
Massimo hoped she found some comfort in the fact that she didn't have any choice. When Massimo had first killed someone, he didn't even have any excuse like self-defense or the interest of protecting someone. He simply did it because it, like every other mafia duty, was expected of him.
Massimo stepped outside. Already, the street had turned into a brutal battlefield.
To Massimo's great surprise, Tyler's goons had called for reinforcements. Mafia men more skilled in the direct, deadly approach were on Massimo's doorsteps. And while Gavino's subordinates weren't untrained or unskilled, they weren't talented enough to both win this fight and take in such hostile enemies alive.
With his borrowed gun, Massimo entered the fray. He made a few attempts to use less deadly force, but it was a futile endeavor. He had too many subordinates to keep track of to waste time disarming Tyler's strike force instead of outright killing them.
Dirt and blood quickly stained the rest of Massimo's white suit. The gunpowder tarnished what little shine from the gold and silver trimmings remained.
Massimo couldn't find it within himself to care. This entire date had turned out disastrously. If his stupid costume got irrevocably ruined, it was no great loss—he likely wouldn't want to see it ever again anyways.
"On your left," Massimo barked out to one of his men. The idiot wasn't responding fast enough, so Massimo covered for him, shooting the enemy before they could do anything.
"Thanks," the man stumbled out.
