"No," Luca replied quickly. "You're good to come back."
"That's good at least," Massimo remarked. "We'll talk later."
Without another word, he hung up. He looked over himself in the bathroom mirror before heading out.
Elena stood in the front office, feeling out of place. A feeling that did not ease up, especially since the only clothes Emi had that fit her were an oversized brown sweater and matching brown skirt. Elena was grateful Aria had talked her into buying a thick pair of white tights—though they weren't clean, they would definitely keep the winter chill off her otherwise exposed skin.
Still, Elena felt that she looked foolish next to the dozen or so mafia men, cleaning their guns and otherwise making themselves busy. Gavino shot her a sympathetic smile and gestured with his one arm for her to come over.
"Are you doing okay?" she asked.
"No worse than usual," Gavino replied. "But I should be asking you that, doc. You were the one who had a nice, fancy date ruined by those chumps."
Elena hoped she didn't pale too noticeably in the room's bad lighting. "I'm just glad everyone is okay," she said quickly.
Gavino grinned. He looked like he was about to ask something else, but his head snapped to attention as the door to the office opened. When everyone heard the familiar echo of Massimo's footsteps, they, too, turned up to look at him.
Massimo, heedless of his power, walked up to Gavino. Thankfully, he didn't even spare a glance at Elena.
"I have it on good authority that was the last bit of trouble we'll be dealing with tonight," Massimo said coolly. "So Elena and I will be heading out."
"Let me lend you some vehicles. Just to be safe," Gavino said with a grin.
"I'm sure your boys will appreciate them more," Massimo countered.
"We have enough for everyone," Gavino replied.
And like that, they were all piling out the door and walking to a nearby garage. Though there were a fair number of cars, Elena quickly realized there weren't enough for everyone.
But Gavino walked over to a nearby motorcycle instead. He pulled two helmets off the wall.
"This should be good enough, yes?" he asked.
"I trained in a lower pitch than I otherwise used until I could drop into it naturally."
"And set up some elaborate answering machine back on that date when I called you in front of you?"
"Well, I had Luca actually pick recorded lines, but—"
Elena wanted to scream in frustration. Massimo could no doubt sense her anger radiating off her because he suddenly stopped talking.
"Listen, Elena, can I just explain—"
"No you fucking can't," Elena snapped back. "I think I understand well enough—"
Suddenly, the motorcycle began to loudly beep. Elena glanced over Massimo's shoulder and saw that the gas tank was almost empty.
"Perfect," Massimo muttered before a curse. "Just perfect."
