The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 361

Massimo stared at the fuel gauge, as if that would change the fact that the motorcycle didn't have much gas left. At least the damn thing beeped before it was completely empty—getting stranded on a deserted street with no easy way home truly would be the worst way to end this evening-into-morning adventure. So Massimo only muttered a few choice curse words as he dutifully looked for nearby gas stations.

There. A dingy thing with only four pumps and cracking asphalt, but it would do. It even had a small, twenty-four hour convenience store attached to it.

Massimo rolled the motorcycle to a stop in front of one of the empty pump. The second the vehicle was no longer moving, Elena removed her hands from Massimo's waist and jumped off. Massimo tried not to take it personally.

Massimo fumbled for his wallet, trying to form a rebuttal to Elena's prior accusations. But every explanation sounded weak even within his own mind. He couldn't stop thinking about Fabio calling the whole ordeal idiotic.

How could he explain that he had fallen in love with Elena as herself first? That even though he enjoyed his mystery wife's texts, he much preferred to see Elena in person and work beside her, brainstorming solutions to every obstacle? Should he bring up how shocked he was when he found her blocked text messages, how conflicted he was as he read each one, and how lost he felt knowing that Elena would never want someone like him?

Massimo opened his mouth, determined to try.

But Elena was already dusting off her outfit with a frown and then, without a single word, storming into the convenience store.

Massimo turned back to the gas pump. He kicked it once before his own frustration left him feeling foolish. He cursed, quietly, as he started filling up the motorcycle's gas tank.

Elena walked quickly through the worn down aisles of the small, dirty convenience store. The cashier barely blinked as she moved past him. It was refreshing to be somewhere where no one knew her reputation as the Mafia Queen and she could just be herself.

She could just be Elena, a simple woman who was at her wits' end.

Elena was also glad to be away from Massimo. She really didn't want to see him right now. Not after he had confessed to all the many, many lies he had told her to maintain the idea that he and her husband were two separate people.

Elena did her best to smile. "We should," she said simply, already looking for an escape route. Taking a page from Alessia's strategy, Elena grabbed a random box of mac and cheese off the shelf and headed down the opposite end of the aisle.

Alessia was right on her heels. "When are you free?" she pressed.

"This week isn't great. I'll let you know when I have more of my work schedule for the month."

Elena hurried down a new aisle, but Alessia easily kept pace.

"Why don't we just pencil something in now?" Alessia suggested. "We can switch the date if you're busy later. It's just been so long since we met up at that park for brunch, Elena—I feel like I never see you anymore!"
