A few hours earlier, Elena waited in her bedroom at the Ferraro estate. She knew she needed to talk to Massimo, but that task felt impossible. Though she had first entered the estate with a clear goal in mind—confront her boss about his secret identity as her mystery husband and have him go over every little detail until she was satisfied—his unexpected absence meant Elena could only stew in her thoughts alone.
Was this even the right move? Should she just assume the worst? Her best friend Aria and even her mother Sloane had written off the Mafia King—and that was without knowing his secret identity as Elena's husband!
Elena had certainly felt betrayed the minute her husband "Max" lost his mask and revealed Massimo's face. And though they had been running for their lives, Massimo could've handled the situation better...
Elena sighed. She got up to pace around the large bedroom. Her thoughts were becoming too restless for her to stay still.
Elena knew she loved her husband Max. She wouldn't have felt so betrayed by his real identity if she didn't. But that still left her in an awkward position.
As Aria had pointed out, Max was fake. Max was simple mask Massimo could hide behind. But the real question was whether there was any truth held in that false identity of "Max, the loving husband."
Mr. Fabio certainly believed the real Massimo was behind every one of Max's actions. He seemed to hint that it was the only way Massimo thought he could be genuine and loving with Elena. If that was true, that would mean that Elena had just fallen in love with Massimo at his most vulnerable.
But what if Massimo was just being cruel? Elena had seen him be underhanded and manipulative to other mafia members—why wouldn't he behave the same way with his doctor? That's at least the perspective Aria held.
Elena didn't know who to believe. Her friend had made good points—but so had Mr. Fabio. Despite having heard out all possible perspectives, Elena's feelings were still too muddled for her to sort through and untangle.
She thought she would feel better once she had the papers in hand, but they were hardly decisive evidence. On a whim, Elena grabbed out her other contract, too.
Elena needed more space to view the extensive documents, so she laid them out on the dinning room table. She read each word carefully, as if they were precious clues to a grand puzzle. She even took out the divorce papers Mr. Fabio had returned to her and examined those just as closely.
But the words were too clinical in places for Elena to read into. And while her contract as the Mafia Queen included what romantic gestures were permitted versus not, it was hardly a romantic confession. Elena spent what felt like hours pouring over every page, trying—and failing—to figure out how Massimo felt about her—and, in return, how she should feel about him.
Elena might've stayed at that dinning room table, completely lost in her thoughts, if not for her phone unexpectedly ringing. A call from her mother Sloane interrupted Elena's self-appointed mission.
