Elena couldn't believe it. She was in a cab headed straight to the airport. She had debated taking the bus and making a few transfers, but that seemed more than a little impractical with her suitcase.

Besides, as her mother pointed out, taking public transportation would take longer. And time wasn't on Elena's side.

Even now, Elena's mother offered advice over the phone. "Don't delay, I mean it," Sloane advised. "Just get the first ticket available to California, and we'll figure out the rest from there."

Elena used her other phone to look at different flight options. "One is boarding in the next hour," Elena reported. "And it's at the airport closest to your house."

Sloane hummed. "An hour is cutting it close with security screening, but I think that should be fine. Want me to buy the ticket?"

"No," Elena hurriedly replied. "I have enough savings to buy it myself. But I think I'll wait until I'm at the airport itself to get it—you know how bad New York traffic can be."

"Right," Sloane sighed. "Maybe taking the subway would've been faster..."

Elena smiled as her mother fussed. It would be nice to see her in person again. Though the two women weren't quite used to their respective roles of mother and daughter, Elena could tell Sloane cared deeply for her.

It was nice to have someone who loved her unconditionally. Elena had thought she found that in her husband but—

Elena shook her head firmly. She was not going to think about that. Not right now—she had a plane to catch.

"Promise you'll send me the details of your flight as soon as you have them?" Sloane asked. "I can see about getting you a ride from the airport to my house."

"That's not necessary," Elena replied, "but thank you. And yes, I will."

For all of Elena's buzzing nervous energy, she knew her mother was dealing with it worse. Given Sloane's history of barely escaping the mafia, it made sense that she'd be nervous, too. Elena wanted to reassure her mother that everything would be okay.
