Before Elena knew it, her mother was running over, taking her suitcase, and then hugging her tightly.
"Hello, Elena," she said warmly. "I'm so glad to see you again."
Her mother's voice cracked on the word "again" as she was overcome by her emotions. Elena found herself smiling at the simple but welcome expression.
"Why are you here?" Elena asked, still more than a little confused.
"To see my daughter, silly." With one more firm squeeze, Sloane let go of Elena. She took a long look at Elena and smiled once more.
"But the airport is such a long drive from your house," Elena pointed out. "You didn't have to—"
"But I did," Sloane interrupted with a grin. "And I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Any mother would do the same."
Elena felt Sloane's joy rub off on her. Despite the unhappy circumstances that led her here, Elena was happy—just because her mother was at her side again.
Showing up to the airport was something loved ones did all the time. Elena just had never experienced it before.
But this was how a family was supposed to behave. Elena knew that much by how heart swelled with love at the gesture.
"You must be exhausted from your flight. Here, let me help carry your things to my car and we'll head home so you can rest."
"Are you sure it's alright for me to stay with you on such short notice?" Elena asked. "I could rent a hotel—"
"Absolutely not," Sloane insisted. "I want you there, Elena. I promise, you're going to love it."
Massimo rode in the back of his limousine in silence. Even when he entered the Ferraro estate, he refused to look anyone—not Luca nor his servants—in the eye. Instead, he went to his office and shut the door, never uttering a single word.
Elena was incredibly far away. And though she was just on the opposite side of the country, Massimo felt like she might as well be in outer space. So he took the phrase and copied into his search bar.
Massimo smiled as he looked at the results. There were plenty of advice articles on the topic and different "tips and tricks" or "relationship hacks" that could save the relationship. This would definitely help!
Massimo jotted down a few quick ideas from the articles. Perhaps he could show Elena he cared—even while staying in New York.
With that taken care of, Massimo pivoted back to mafia work.
Tyler had been quiet ever since the FBI investigation into Massimo was so much as rumored to be happening. And the fact that the Vitales knew about the investigation definitely pointed to Tyler's involvement. It would be incredibly risky, but perhaps that snake had somehow gotten the FBI on Massimo's case.
Regardless, the FBI investigation was the most pressing concern—and the only problem Massimo could actually deal with right now. Maybe, if Massimo played his cards right, he could even find proof of Tyler's involvement and take care of two big annoyances at once.
