Chapter 38
Massimo couldn’t deny it. He had gotten close to Elena Vitae. He cared about her, so he cared a lot about her opinions.
He couldn’t trace it back to one moment, which terrified Massimo. Was it when she took a bullet for him? Ended up finding him in the casino while drugged?
Or was it when she skillfully showed off her expertise–when she treated his men like she hadn’t just witnessed her first shootout? Or immediately identified what was wrong with the casino’s owner?
One thing was for certain: Massimo definitely had grown fond of her.
Massimo felt like he was going to stop breathing. How had he made such a fatal mistake?
His grandfather Fabio had drilled into him the importance of being untouchable. Of not letting anyone close. It was a way to stay safe and free from outside influences.
And here Massimo was, letting a woman have such sway over him.
Massimo had completely changed his approach with Tyler because of Elena. And he did it not once but twice–at the ABC Casino and now with the newspapers defaming Tyler. Massimo thought he was making the best decisions he could at the time, but had he?
What kind of Mafia King let his decisions change based on something as fragile and superficial as emotions? Massimo was supposed to be the Don of All Dons, someone who was above such manipulative tactics and flawed logic. He needed to keep a clear head and be rational at all times.
“Massimo? Are you alright?” Elena asked.
Massimo took a steadying breath. He needed to be calm, cool, and collected.
He nodded.
Even if Massimo was falling in love with Elena, he knew it could go nowhere. First of all, they were both married. And even if Massimo was having troubles with his wife, he would never want to put Elena in the position of
adulteress.
Elena was too pure to ever take him up on the offer anyways. She was too kind to hurt husband in that way. And she wouldn’t break a promise–let alone a marriage contract–so casually.
And most importantly, Elena was married to Joshua Millers the prosecutor who had publicly stated he would take down the Ferraro’s entire criminal empire.
Massimo’s emotions protested that Elena would never let such a thing happen, but he knew better than to listen to them. Feelings only stopped him from seeing cold, hard facts.
Elena frowned. Even though Massimo said he was fine, he looked a little pale.
“Are you sure? I can see if the staff has anything to help if you-”
“I’m fine,” Massimo stated, his voice cold and loud. “Let’s st finish up here.”
Massimo snapped his fingers, and several servers cleared out their dishes.
Elena got the distinct impression that they were now skipping over many remaining courses. The servers brought out their main meals quickly and left a simple plate of pastries in the center as dessert.
Throughout it all, Massimo’s quietness continued. He hurriedly ate his meal in silence.
Elena didn’t have the heart to break it with small talk. Her boss must really be upset about not finding a good gift
