Chapter 39

“Good thing we took a break,” Massimo gritted out. “I would have missed such a perfect gift.”
Elena doubted Massimo’s convictions but let him duck back into the store. For whatever reason, he was done with this trip. Elena knew he would only get more short and annoyed if she protested his decision.
After Massimo bought his last present, they separated. Elena had expected Massimo to at least offer to drive her back to his estate or maybe the bus stop, but he didn’t. He must have been in a hurry to deliver his gifts to his wife.
So Elena made the long trip back home by herself. When she got home, the apartment was empty–Aria must be out on a date.
Elena entered her room and pulled out her civilian phone. She had taken to leaving it at her apartment so she wouldn’t get distracted and check her messages so much.
And so she wouldn’t be constantly disappointed that she didn’t have any new messages.
But all that had done was make her return home consistently disappointing. Because the first thing she would do is check her text messages.
Elena chided herself even now as she pulled up her texting history with her husband. Again, she was greeted by her last message she sent her asking her husband to reach out when he was ready to talk.
Elena sighed and laid down on her bed.
Elena wished she had asked Aria more about her husband. She still didn’t know what he looked like, what his voice sounded like, or how he dressed. And despite his radio silence, Elena wanted to know more about him–even something as simple as his eye color or how he styled his hair felt like precious and important information.
She tried to imagine him, but she couldn’t think of anything. This mystery man had to be both patient and kind like the man Elena had texted but quick to anger and rude like the man Aria had met. The only man Elena could imagine that fit both of those descriptions would be her boss, Massimo Ferraro.
But that was ridiculous. While Massimo could be patient about work, he didn’t even have the spare two minutes to drop Elena off at the bus stop.
Elena got up and got ready for bed. As she did, she thought about all the people in her life and their romantic relationships. Maybe there was some lesson to be learned that Elena could use to keep her own love life from falling to pieces.
Her parents‘ relationship had ended messily because her father had neglected her mother, forcing his wants on her. It was only natural she left in the middle of the night. Just as it was only natural her father replaced her with a vapid, obedient new wife.
Aria meanwhile traded through her partners like they were meals, never eating the same thing twice. She seemed happy and taken care of, but Elena wondered if that was really the case. Did Aria ever long to settle down with someone to have one person who knew her and loved her completely, and to love and know them the same?

Weirdly, this made Massimo and his mystery wife the most stable pairing of the lot, Massimo was trying to learn more about her, but he seemed to be getting very frustrated over it.
