Massimo didn't have time to object to Luca's proposal. Suddenly, more CO2 alarms were going off. Massimo couldn't mistake that shrill noise—not when it sounded like it was coming from the whole building.
Last time, Luca had hacked into the alarms, he had only targeted one area. From the sounds of it, Massimo felt like every alarm in the entire police station was going off. It was impossible to hear anything.
If Massimo was going to get caught by the police, he didn't want to get caught completely unaware. So he did his best to sneak over closer to the door and his impromptu jammer.
He could vaguely make out some voices but he couldn't distinguish which security guard was talking nor what they were even saying. While the men had to shout to be heard over the alarms, the shrill beeps were not easily overwhelmed. He could vaguely hear something about the alarms being a problem—no duh—and that they had gone off earlier.
For a split second, Massimo thought he heard Luca's voice speak up. Not from the ear piece, but beyond the door. But that was ridiculous.
Slowly, the voices got more distant. Were they leaving? Then, all at once, there were three firm knocks on the door from outside.
That was a code for "all clear" or "proceed as planned"—a code Massimo had specifically made with his advisor. Was Luca actually in the building? And why?
A thousand more questions burned in Massimo's mind, but he had time for none of them. As Luca had been saying, Massimo needed to leave—and fast.
So the Don of All Dons removed the flashdrive from the police's servers, undid his impromptu door jammer, and left the server room.
Massimo proceeded through the building as planned. He didn't run into any guards. Even after the CO2 alarms had been disabled, Massimo didn't see any police officers or security at all.
He was almost at the public entry to the station, and then he would be free and away from danger. But as he was passing by one of the security rooms, he finally heard signs of other people. Massimo ducked behind a corner as he heard conversation pick up.
"Yeah, the night shift said the alarms went off briefly on the third floor. And then, well, you were here when the entire building's alarms lit up," one security guard explained.
Then a very familiar voice spoke up, "I see. That does narrow down what problems you may be having."
