"Well, if he's not exhibiting any symptoms, I can't do anything about that," Elena said slowly. She turned to JJ. "Your ears are good, so I'll be checking your eyes now, okay?"
Elena had just turned on the pen light when Jack immediately began protesting.
"You can't shine a light that bright into a child's eyes," he all but yelled. "They're still developing—you'll blind the kid!"
"Mr. Winslow, I assure you our lights are not bright enough to do that," Elena said. "Additionally, I move the light quickly, so JJ isn't even experiencing any discomfort."
Jack just shook his head. "Here, if you won't do things correctly, I will," he declared.
Elena moved quickly to avoid letting Jack get the pen light. "Alright, eyes are good, too," she said. "Now onto the mouth."
Jack was faster in getting the stethoscope. He approached his son confidently, but Elena could tell he was about to push the medical device too far into the child's mouth.
"Let's clean that first!" Elena said, stealing the device back from the adult.
The rest of the visit passed in a similar manner. Despite being the expert here, Jack wouldn't listen to a word Elena said.
He would insist Elena wasn't doing steps in the right order or he would ask questions about problems too old or vague for Elena to do anything about them. Most annoyingly, he would do all these interruptions with unfaltering confidence that everything he was doing was perfect.
It made Elena want to scream.
Sure, she had been underestimated plenty of times before—by doctors, mafia men, even Massimo. But no one had tried to argue Elena was bad at her job. One look at what she was doing made her expertise clear.
Even Massimo, the Mafia King, the person who by all rights should be the hardest man to ever impress, never insulted Elena's skill—not after she spotted his injury and fixed it on the same day they met. With the Mafia King claiming Elena as his doctor, her professional opinion became impossible to question. Even when she was just the Ferraro family doctor, Elena was allowed access to a mafia cruise and treated as the forefront medical expert there!
If Massimo was here, there was no doubt in Elena's mind that he wouldn't suffer this fool. No, Jack would've been thrown out of the appointment room by now. And even if Massimo didn't reveal his mafia status, the Winslows would no doubt respect Massimo's power and wealth—he practically oozed an elite aura.
Yet despite similarity, Massimo couldn't be more different from the Winslows. He never cared about Elena's low status or her money problems. The minute he decided she was an expert doctor, nothing else mattered.
Elena missed that. She had taken that for granted.
