Though Elena was a little unnerved, she did her best to hide her surprise. Though Jack had seemingly doubted Elena's expertise, he had apparently specifically requested her to do his son's yearly physical—maybe he didn't agree with his parents' views as much as he appeared to?
Elena looked down at the chart waiting for her at the desk. She quickly scanned over it. She needed to focus on the job she was about to do.
"So you're also Jack Winslow?" she asked the young boy who immediately nodded.
"Yep, he's named after his old man," Jack explained. "The wife and I just call him JJ—and you better believe that's stuck everywhere outside of his classroom."
"I'm sorry I didn't get to meet him until now," Elena remarked good naturedly. "I didn't know you were even married, Jack—let alone that you had a child. They should've come to dinner last night."
Jack waved his hand dismissively as Elena put on a new pair of latex gloves.
"Oh, well, those family dinners are normally just immediate family dinners," Jack explained. "So just my brothers and our parents—the wives and kids come out for the holiday parties! We all need a break from them some days, y'know?"
Elena turned to face the cabinets in the wall, pretending to look for something. In reality, she wanted to calm down before her anger flared.
Why would Cameron arrange for Sloane and herself to show up to what was supposed to be an intimate family gathering? That felt incredibly rude. He had forced Noah—and by extension, Sloane and Elena herself—to break the Winslows' usual traditions, which meant that everyone started the evening off in a bad mood.
Elena resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Even mafia traditions, with how old-school and out of date they were, didn't have this many unspoken rules and rituals! How petty did the Winslows have to be to stoop to this low-level type of snubbing? Again, Elena hadn't even heard rumors of mafia families being this petty!
Elena took a deep breath, smiled, and turned around. "Alright, let's get started, JJ," Elena declared. "First, let's take off the shoes and then you can jump on over here to get your height and weight measured."
The first five minutes of the visit were blessedly quiet. Even though Elena could feel Jack's eyes burning a hole into her back from how hard he was staring, it was fine. Sure, Jack might've been silently judging her, but Elena could stay focused on her work.
JJ was a delightful seven year old, too. He didn't say much, but he smiled easily and was very polite. If it wasn't for his father, JJ would've been the perfect little patient.
