Chapter 42

Elena found that she really enjoyed that Massimo was trying to be a devoted husband. His work had to stick to an actual schedule now that he was going on so many dates–which meant that Elena got a real work schedule, sometimes with over a week’s worth of notice.
Not to mention, Elena had more free time now than she had ever had before. And for some reason, Aria was out even more frequently than normal, so Elena had the whole apartment to herself.
her roommate
Elena had never had this much freedom and privacy before. Between her father’s tyrannical upbringing, the hell of higher education, and navigating the mess of the American ob market, Elena had always kept herself very busy.
But for the first time ever, she was enjoying a quiet Sunday afternoon with a relaxing bath. And yes, she was reading a new medical study on her phone, but this was as peaceful as Elena had ever been.
When she heard the apartment door open, Elena figured she should probably get out, get dressed, and perhaps see if Aria wanted to get a late lunch–it was the polite thing to do, after all.
But Elena didn’t find Aria in the living room but Elena’s own room. Her roommate was stood in front of Elena’s nightstand that was certainly odd.
“What are you doing here?” Elena asked.
Aria spun around quickly to face Elena. “Looking for you,” she said chirpily. “Are you enjoying your day off?”
Elena smiled and nodded her head. But as Aria smiled back, Elena noticed her roommate was wearing a familiar
necklace.
It was the same gaudy necklace filled with large, different colored gemstones Elena had seen Massimo buy for his
wife.
But why was Aria wearing it? There was no way she could afford something that expensive. Elena doubted anyone without mafia money could buy it.
Aria noticed Elena staring and poked at her necklace.
“Do you like it?” Aria asked. “This style is super trendy right now–all the guys are getting it for their girlfriends.”
“It looks very expensive,” Elena stated.
“I know, right? But get this.” Aria leaned in and whispered, “It’s actually a knock–off of some luxury brand. You’d never guess that all these gems are all fake.”
“Seriously?”
Aria nodded solemnly.
“Wow,” Elena said. If Aria hadn’t told her, Elena would have believed they were real gems–they looked just like the one she saw during her shopping trip with Massimo.
But Elena never had an eye for fashion like Aria. Her roommate had great style and kept up with these sorts of things.
“Remind me to take you the next time I go jewelry shopping,” Elena joked.
“Obviously–you know I’m always looking out for you!”
Elena’s new workflow had the added bonus of seeing a new side to her boss. She had never noticed him texting so frequently during the day. She figured Massimo had an important, long–term business deal, but his second–in-
command informed her that wasn’t the case.

“He’s just texting his wife,” Luca had told her.
Elena couldn’t help but be surprised by the revelation. Though she was also happy that whatever argument or disagreement he was having with his wife must have gotten resolved.
