Chapter 44
Elena ran down the staircase and out the Ferraro estate as fast as she could. She nearly collided with some servants and other workers in a hurry.
But there was no time to apologize or explain. She had to catch the man who was spying on the Ferraro estate.
Elena burst out of the main doors and looked to where the white van was parked. The man had disappeared, but Elena figured he was probably inside the vehicle now.
Elena ran towards the white van.
In the same moment, the van’s engine roared. The van drove away before Elena could even cross the street.
Massimo was waiting outside his estate.
“Care to explain?” he said, none too warmly.
Elena pointed in the direction the white van had gone.
“I saw a guy staring at the house. He had headphones on, so he might have been listening in through special sound receivers nearby. I tried to run after him, but I can’t keep up with a car.”
Massimo’s eyes immediately hardened. “Describe the man and the vehicle.”
Elena could only shake her head. “I couldn’t make out the man at all. The car was a white unmarked van–I couldn’t make out the license plate number but it was local I think it started with an L and had a four somewhere in it.”
If the don was frustrated, he didn’t let it show. He merely nodded his head.
“I’ll have my men look into it,” he stated simply. “Get back to work.”
As Elena re–entered the building, Luca went to Massimo’s side.
“Sir,” his second–in–command said, “that was probably-
“I know,” Massimo spat out. “The local cops have a beat–up white van. I’m not a fool, Luca.”
“Of course not,” Luca immediately agreed. “So you must know there’s only a handful of fools at the police station who would try to spy on your estate.”
“Yes, it’s obviously Joshua Millers‘ doing.”
Massimo had let the wannabe prosecutor run around for too long–he was getting nearly as bold as Tyler. Still, the idea of making Elena’s husband disappear felt unappealing for a number of reasons.
The most important one being that Elena would ask questions–that Elena would needlessly suffer. She was a bleeding heart, after all.
“We need to reassess what to do about him,” Massimo declared. “This cannot be tolerated.”
“Should I also keep this matter quiet?”
Massimo knew what Luca was asking–had he decided whether or not to trust Elena yet. Luca had found no evidence that pointed to her helping her husband’s goal of aking down the mafia. In fact, Elena had just acted directly against Joshua.
Massimo didn’t like the idea of continuing to doubt Elena. And considering Massimo’s own situation with his wife, he felt it was possible Elena had no idea on the specifics of her husband’s job–or perhaps she had learned them only after deciding to work at the Ferraro’s hospital.

Maybe Elena had chosen to side with Massimo over her husband. Maybe she had chosen to trust him. Massimo sighed. “Don’t advertise it,” he ordered, “but you don’t have to hide it either.”
The rest of Elena’s work day went by smoothly. She chided Herself for not getting more clues about the potential spy. But at the end of the day, Elena was a doctor, not a pure mafia criminal.
Elena had done her best. She tried not to get too upset about it. Besides, Massimo would likely have it all under control in a few days–just like he had done with advertising Tyler Morello’s misdeeds in every major news outlet.
As Elena walked home, she stumbled into a familiar face–quite literally. Luckily, the man didn’t drop his suitcase this time.
Joshua Millers smiled brightly. “We have got to stop meeting like this,” he teased.
Elena did her best to match his energy. But even though they were meeting at a more reasonable hour, she didn’t feel more enthusiastic about talking to Joshua. She had already declined his offer of protection.
“Don’t worry,” Elena said warmly. “I just finished work and am heading back home. So this accidental bump is all you’ll get from me!”
Joshua laughed at the lame joke. It almost made Elena feel guilty about brushing him off.
“If you’re not in a hurry then,” Joshua said, “there’s a nice Italian place close by. Let me make up for my rude behavior last time?”
Elena had many doubts about this dinner being nicer, but she also could tell Joshua wouldn’t take no for an
answer.
“I was in the mood for pasta.”
Joshua at least had the good sense to wait until Elena had finished her meal and dessert was order before talking about witness protection.
“Trust me,” Joshua said seriously. “Everyone on the force will be making sure you’re okay.”
That made Elena raise her eyebrows in doubt. “No way–I’m not important enough for that kind of treatment.”
“You could be. If you testified against Massimo Ferraro.”
Elena nearly choked on her water. She was suddenly grateful there was no ice to accidentally block her airway.
How had Joshua figured out that she worked for the Don of All Dons? Elena felt very guilty. She didn’t need to be causing trouble for the one man in her life who consistently looked out for her.
The worry must show on her face because Joshua’s voice gets quiet and reassuring.
“I don’t blame you for working for him, Elena,” he says softly. “College debts are no joke, and I know you have always had to fend for yourself. But you don’t need to be a part of the dark mafia world anymore.”
Elena can only numbly shake her head. There isn’t a way for her to fully explain just how wonderful working for Massimo has been–to explain how much she wants to keep working there until her contract is up.
“You’ve been fighting alone for so long,” Joshua continued “Please let me fight for you. Let me protect you, Elena.

Elena stood abruptly. “I can’t.” She hoped she got across that message with every fiber of her being.
“Elena, please consider-”
“I have considered it,” Elena snaps back–not harshly but in a tone that leaves no room for discussion. “I really,
