Chapter 45
Elena looks between Joshua and Massimo. She really hadn‘ planned on them ever meeting–let alone Massimo recognizing Joshua!
Which led to the unfortunate circumstance where Massima would assume Joshua was Elena’s husband. Elena really wished she hadn’t blurted out his name so long ago.
Elena debated claiming that this Joshua Millers was different from the Joshua Millers she was married to–it was a common enough name, after all. But wouldn’t it look more suspicious to say that?
Elena glanced at Joshua and gritted her teeth. “Yes, this is my husband, Joshua Millers.”
For his part, Joshua took the lie in stride. He placed a loving hand on her shoulder. “Couldn’t ask for a better wife, “Joshua said sweetly.
The compliment took Elena by surprise. Joshua looked at Elena with such a fond expression as he spoke.
But when he looked at Massimo, that fondness was gone. It was replaced by polite hatred.
“And you must be the boss I’ve heard so much about.” Joshua grinned like a shark.
Joshua offered out a hand to Massimo. Rather than shaking it, Massimo stuck both hands in his pockets–Elena tried not to wince.
Joshua couldn’t quite hide his annoyance. He dropped both his hands to his side with a frown.
Massimo only looked amused. “Only good things, I hope,” the mafia boss shot back.
Joshua laughed darkly. As he did, he took a step closer to Massimo.
Elena feared this meeting was quickly getting out of hand. How could she stop these two men from fighting?
“Wait, you know Massimo?” Aria suddenly said.
Elena had been so distracted by her white lie potentially unraveling that she had forgotten all about her roommate -and judging by the two men’s reactions, she wasn’t the only one.
Elena could understand Joshua ignoring her, but she was surprised Massimo could forget about Aria when she was clinging to Massimo’s arm. Now that Elena looked close, it almost looked like they were on a date. But surely that couldn’t be the case.
Elena couldn’t imagine Massimo loving someone like Aria- she had too big of a personality and was too sexually loose. And she equally couldn’t imagine Aria liking someone like Massimo–he was too judgmental, cold, and secretive to ever catch Aria’s eyes. They would make a terrible couple.
Assured of this, Elena turned to Aria. “I’m his family physician,” Elena explained.
Aria wrinkled her brow. “I thought you worked at that hospital? What was it called again–St. Something?”
“St. Camillus Hospital,” Massimo said. His voice had turne annoyed as he answered Aria.
Massimo sighed, but still continued speaking, “My family as some connections there, so when we need a new physician, we looked over the staff. And Elena was the best andidate.”
Elena laughed. “I seem to recall you thinking differently at he time.”
“You proved me wrong though, didn’t you?” Massimo shot back, his voice matching Elena’s teasing tone.
“That’s so cool!” Aria exclaimed, her smile too wide to be natural. “You should have told me about all that, Elena. We could have celebrated your promotion.”

Elena suddenly felt bad she had kept Aria in the dark about so much. “It wasn’t worth celebrating,” she said shyly. To Elena’s surprise, it wasn’t Aria who protested her words, but Massimo.
“Being the best is no small feat,” Massimo said solemnly.
Elena felt her cheeks blush. Her words got caught in her throat. Massimo had never complimented her so directly like that.
“Exactly,” Aria stated. Her smile was almost crazed. “And I can’t believe my two favorite people already know each other–life sure is crazy.”
“Isn’t it just,” Joshua agreed before turning back to Massimo. “But you must have pretty serious connections at St. Camillus to pull off a stunt like that. Do you fund the hospital financially through large donations or have ‘ friends and family‘ among the staff?”
It was clear Joshua was fishing for information–likely trying to incriminate Massimo somehow. Elena needed to change the topic and fast.
Elena turned to Massimo and Aria. “So, what are you two doing here? How do you know each other?”
Massimo frowned. There was something different about telling Elena he was married and introducing her to his wife in person. It made the situation so much more real.
And Massimo didn’t want to admit that to the woman he had a crush on.
“It’s not an interesting story,” Massimo said. “Anyways-”
“We’re married!” Aria exclaimed brightly. “Massimo was taking me out on a date–just like you and Joshua!”
Elena looked stunned. Massimo couldn’t meet her eyes.
“You’re married?” Elena repeated. “You two?!”
Aria grinned and nodded her head. She gripped Massimo’s arm tighter.
“But you don’t wear any wedding rings,” Elena objected.
Aria waved her free hand dismissively. “I’m not big on rings,” she confessed, “and anyways, it was picked out by his grandfather since Massimo was too stressed and busy at the time to do it herself. We’re going to pick out new rings once his busy season dies down.”
Massimo didn’t like the way Aria blabbed so freely about so many details and plans. Joshua, the opportunistic prosecutor, clearly felt differently.
“Oh, it’s the busy season?” Joshua asked casually, voice filled with interest. “What exactly is your husband getting up to?”
“Fixing up cars,” Massimo spat out slowly. “It’s really boring stuff.” Massimo glared at Joshua, daring him to call out his lie–then Massimo would have a good excuse to silence the prosecutor for good.
“He’s always saying that,” Aria said fondly. “No work talk during date nights–it’s become a little rule of ours.”
Elena saw the opportunity to defuse the tense situation. She followed Aria’s lead.
“My husband is the same way,” Elena said, matching Aria’s tone.
Aria’s eyes sparkled. “Why don’t we have a double date sometime? We can talk about all our husbands‘ bad little habits.”
The two women laughed.
