Chapter 65
Ordinarily, Massimo would let his men handle such trivial work. But Tyler had made himself Massimo’s enemy, and Massimo trusted Luca to have good information.
So Massimo looked at the list Luca had emailed him. While the locations seemed a instantly spotted a pattern.
y random, Massimo
These flights were all to the home cities of moderate to big mafia families. Either old ones that still had a lot of social power and respect among the underground networks, or families with lots of manpower or direct wealth. “It looks like he’s trying to make powerful connections,” Massimo told Luca over the phone.
“That’s what I was thinking,” Luca replied. “Though Tyler might be trying to throw off our scent and waste our time–we can’t confirm that he’s actually going to be on these planes until the day of.”
“Either way, it looks like he’s gearing up for something,” Massimo said. “Otherwise, he wouldn’t bother with any of this. I’ll be over at my office in fifteen–we’ll discuss more then.”
Elena leapt from one subway line to the next, switching up her route to match the chaotic scheduling of midday public transit. Though it was a dizzying affair, Elena made it to the Violet Gardens only twenty minutes after the agreed upon meeting time.
Not that Elena was paying attention to the precise time. She was more focused on trying to find her mystery husband and Mr. Fabio. Elena wandered around the gardens, but only found exotic flowers, not any familiar faces.
Elena stopped an employee to ask about the gentlemen she was supposed to meet.
“The gazebo was rented out by an elderly gentleman,” the woman told Elena, “but he left a little while ago. I think he was with a younger man who left first? There’s been a lot of couples around, so I can’t say for certain.”
Elena thanked her, but inwardly she was disappointed. Had her mystery husband stormed off, convincing Mr. Fabio to leave, too? That didn’t sound like the kind old man Elena knew.
With no other leads, Elena went to call Mr. Fabio but found that her phone was missing.
“Not again,” Elena mumbled. Had she really left it behind in Aria’s hospital room again?
Elena took one last quick walk around the gardens before resolving to return to the hospital anyone was waiting for her here in the gardens anyways.

Elena made it back to Aria’s hospital room. But when she went to open the door, she heard voices already talking. Elena halted her movement, leaving the door open just a crack.
Despite the space between them and Elena’s limited sight, she could instantly recognize Massimo. He was leaning over Aria.
“I need to go,” he told her. “Work needs me.”
“I understand,” Aria said sadly. “It’ll just be so lonely here without you.”
Massimo only hesitated a moment before kissing Aria’s forehead. “I’ll arrange for some gifts to make your stay more comfortable.”
“And?” Aria’s voice entered a teasing tone that made Elena’s heart ache.
“And I’ll see about stopping by during your recovery period,” Massimo said. Was it Elena’s imagination, or did his voice actually sound fond?
