Elena hurried out of the hospital. A doctor had finally come to check on Aria and started treatment. Elena had actually heard about his thoroughness from a few colleagues back before she accepted Massimo’s position–so Elena knew Aria would be in good hands.
“Go,” Aria said after giving her friend a quick hug. “You shouldn’t be too late if you le
now.”
“I should call Mr. Fabio to let him know-”
“No,” Aria interrupted her suddenly. “You said he’s a gentleman right? He and his grandson should still be waiting -they probably figured you just got caught in traffic–so don’t stall any longer and go find them!”
So Elena left. She ran to catch a subway train, not trusting the bus at this hour. There would be too much traffic.
Massimo was focused on finding his wife. He was going to tell her of his plans. This farce of a relationship had gone on long enough.
Massimo was so focused that he barely paid attention to his surroundings. Had he taken a bit more care, he likely would’ve seen Elena rushing to make her date. Had he talked to her, he might’ve learned about the details of that date.
Had Massimo and Elena been in less of a hurry or more observant of the people they passed by in that hospital lobby, they might’ve learned each other’s true identities. But as it was, they were both too absorbed on their own plans to see the bigger picture.
And as it was, Massimo checked in at the front desk and went to meet the woman he had mistaken for his wife.
Massimo opened the door to Aria’s room.
The woman was covered in gauze all along her arms. Their thickness made Aria’s already small and slim frame look outright tiny and sickly. The weak smile she flashed at him made her seem even smaller.
“Massimo!” she exclaimed. Or, well, she tried to exclaim. Her voice came out horse and cracking.
Massimo entered the room and closed the door. It didn’t matter how pathetic Aria looked. He knew in his heart he needed to get divorced–there was no point in delaying it.
Massimo repeated these facts in his head as he got closer to Aria’s hospital bed.
“Aria,” he greeted her neutrally, “what happened?”
“It’s stupid,” Aria replied, “but I just really wanted to bake something for you and your grai the oven malfunctioned and well, you can see how well it all turned out.”
And I guess
Aria chuckled, but it sounded more like a cough. Massimo was surprised–had she really managed to injure herself so badly while making baked goods?
As if reading his expression, Aria continued, “Sugar burns are no joke. The doctor says I got off lucky- any later and skin grafts would do me no good.”
Aria sighed. “But I need to take it easy, he said, since any stress will definitely hurt my recovery. It’s really hard to stay calm hearing that, y’know?”
Massimo frowned. He had wanted to tell Aria about getting divorced today, but if such news would physically hurt her, maybe he should delay it…
Aria did look so fragile lying on the hospital bed. Plus, she had only gotten injured because he was trying to do

something nice for him and Fabio. Massimo could at least wait until Aria was all healed up to bring up such potentially distressing news.
