Chapter 68
Elena woke up the next morning dazed. She felt more tired waking up than she did going to sleep.
tshe had, in fact, slept over in C mafia mission went sideways.
So it took Elena a moment to realize she hadn’t woken up in her own Massimo’s guest room. The same guest room she had borrowed after “Wait,” Elena muttered, still waking up, “that means I didn’t imagine last night. I really did run into Massimo!” Elena replayed last night’s events in her mind. She hadn’t crossed any lines or done anything wrong, had she? But her memories weren’t the clearest. She recalled chiding her boss over his behavior, but not much else.
Had he really gotten too close? Or had Elena’s heightened adrenaline just made her feel he was crossing lines left and right?

Elena decided to split the difference and apologize for treating him badly and assuming he would unknowingly hurt his wife.
Elena got up. There was a chance some of her old clothes from her last stay at the Ferraro estate were still around. While Elena did find her borrowed clothes in the nearby dresser, she found another surprise on the nightstand. Sitting there was some headache medicine, water, and a note in Massimo’s handwriting.
“Come downstairs for a meal once you’re feeling better.”
She smiled at his concern. How very direct yet very caring–and so entirely Massimo.
But Elena forced that bright smile down to a neutral expression. He was, after all, just her employer—nothing

Elena felt much better after she showered and got dressed. Finally prepared, she walked the familiar path to the Ferraro’s dining room.
Massimo was already there. Sitting with a cup of coffee and a tablet in his hand–had he been waiting for her?
No, that was ridiculous. Elena quickly took a seat across from him before she could+ thoughts.
“Good morning,” Elena greeted him.
“It’s almost the afternoon,” Massimo countered. “I take it you’re well rested then?”
“Yes,” Elena hurriedly replied. “Thank you for letting me stay over.”
Massimo waved a hand dismissively.

Servants came out to serve them lunch–it was some kind of sandwich made out of ridiculously expensive ingredients. Sure, Elena recognized the base ingredients of different types of lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and chicken, but they tasted better than anything she could’ve picked up from the grocery store. She wouldn’t be surprised if they had been especially flown in for Massimo’s meal directly from the farm they were gathered from or something equally ridiculous.
Even though Elena had eaten such delicious meals before, this lunch felt different. Back when she was recovering from her bullet wound, Elena focused on the food, but the main attraction was texting her husband. Trying and failing to explain everything to him, and his ridiculous reactions to whatever she said.
Elena found that though she and Massimo were quietly eating, she preferred this atmosphere. It was better to eat

“Again, Don Massimo,” Elena said, breaking the quiet, “thank you properly as a subordinate last night. So to show me such hospitality appreciate.”
Massimo didn’t outwardly react.
