Chapter 84
“Do you mind if I join you?”
Elena whipped her head to the sound. It was Massimo.
“Shouldn’t you be partying with everyone else?” she asked.
Massimo shrugged. He leaned on the railing, his elbow nearly touching Elena’s. “Shouldn’t you be there?”
Elena frowned. “I don’t see why. I’m not the one who was proven to be in the right–you’re the center of attention today, Massimo.”
“You did all the work,” Massimo insisted. “You should at least share in some of the festivities. If you’re not there, it’s all pointless.‘

“We both know mafia women are treated as trophies or devils,” Elena said bitterly. “I’ll pass on that tonight. Thanks.”
“I’ve never seen you that way,” Massimo said solemnly.
The two stood in silence for a long time, watching the lazy waves move up and down. It felt like Elena and Massimo were the only two people on the ship.
Elena knew what would happen if she kept quiet. She’d almost definitely end up crossing a line.
“Massimo,” Elena warned, “we’re both married.”
“I won’t be for long,” Massimo replied. “The minute we land, I’m filing for divorce. I don’t love Aria.”
Elena knew her own husband would be filing for divorce any minute now. She knew her own husband didn’t love her. Still, Elena couldn’t bring herself to knowingly break a vow.
“I don’t want to betray my husband,” Elena said solemnly. “As long as I am married, I will remain a faithful wife. And I don’t want to betray or even hurt my best friend.”
Massimo silently listened. Finally, he nodded his head.
“If that’s important to you, I will strive to be more professional with you, Elena–but only if you’re more professional with me.”
Elena squinted at him. “I’m always professional.”
“Few would call interfering with my homelife professional,” Massimo argued. “And I do not wish for you to even mention it. I will be getting divorced from Aria, and it is not the place of my family doctor to try to persuade me otherwise.”
Massimo turned to look Elena squarely in the eyes. “Is that an agreeable deal?”
Though Elena didn’t agree with Massimo’s decision, she could understand where he was coming from. At the end of the day, she couldn’t force him to stay married to her best friend.
“I agree to these terms,” Elena replied.
All too soon, the cruise ship landed. Elena made sure she and Massimo had everything they brought and left nothing behind.
She was also sure to keep a lookout for any suspicious activity. She doubted anyone would have the energy to stir

up trouble though–she had heard the music and laughter from the mafia party echoing throughout the hallways just an hour ago.
By Elena’s estimate, everyone seemed tired and ready to go home.
“Let’s head out,” Massimo told her.
Elena was about to nod back when her phone loudly rang out. She checked the caller ID–it was Aria. Elena answered the call.
“Hello?” Elena said.
“Hey Elena, could you meet me in the conference room real quick? I need to talk to you in private for a sec.”
“Can’t it wait? Massimo and I were about to head out. We could meet up with you at—”
“No,” Aria said forcefully, “it has to be now. It really will just take a sec. Please?”
“Alright.”
Elena hung up the call and turned to Massimo. “I need to help Aria with something. It should only be a minute.”
Massimo sighed.
“Really,” Elena insisted. “We can all meet up at Pondspring Park–it should be easier to refind you there instead of on the docks.”
“Give me your luggage before you go,” Massimo replied. “You’ll be faster if you’re not carrying anything.”
Elena relented and gave Massimo her bags. She waved as she went further back into the cruise ship.
Elena wasn’t excited to enter the conference room she had almost died in, but she trusted Aria had her reasons. It was quiet as she made her way there. From outside, she could see that the lights inside the room were also off.
If Aria had wanted to speak in private, this did seem like the best place to talk.
Elena opened the door. She flipped on the light switch, but she still didn’t see anyone.
“Aria? Are you-”
Elena felt someone grab her from behind and press a cloth hard into her face. She vaguely recognized the smell of chemicals before she was knocked unconscious.
